Help! My b’duccle chicken is about 13 months old and over the past few days has lost lots of feathers- coop covered by feathers . She is quiet and subdued . Lost lots of tummy feathers and noticed a feather has snapped on foot and been bleeding . Might have mild case of scaly leg too and need to treat for this.
I have not witnessed a moult before so don’t know if it’s that or something more serious. Still seems to be eating and drinking. Not sure on egg laying over past few days.Rest of flock are peking bantams - they seem fine - currently!
Any advice welcomed !

if it was winter time i would say that the missing feathers would be from a molt, however, it is summer so i don't think that is the problem. i would guess that she is pulling her feathers out of stress. is she picked on by the other chickens?

No she’s not getting picked on .
Has been broody on and off a few weeks ago.
Dynamics in coop have changed this week as introduced a hen back who had been seperate looking after chicks?
Could scaly leg mite cause it ?
How do you treat the feather on foot that that has bled ?
Thanks

she may have pulled out her breast feathers to make a nest. i guess scaly leg mites could cause a chicken to become stressed out to the point where she may pull her feathers but i don't think that's the problem. i just thought of something: does she have lice? lice sometimes make chickens itch and pull feathers

will inspect tomorrow. Reluctant to hold her too much as worried will hurt her! What’s the best way to treat lice ?

i don't think holding her will hurt her, just don't hold her too long. you could treat lice by giving her a bath with pet shampoo or dishwasher detergent. the water will wash away lice, eggs, and larva and the shampoo will kill lice. You could also use food grade DE. if you use the shampooing method make sure that you thoroughly soak the lice and make sure you rinse out all the shampoo once your done. ( don't use DE if the chicken is wet. DE dehydrates bugs so it wont work if she's wet)

Can you please post some photos of your hen, the feather loss and her legs?

Cheryl, where are you located in the world?

Hi, I’m in England.
Checked her skin for mites and couldn’t see any so didn’t use the diatom- just put lots inside coop .
Put Vaseline on feet as looks like she has scaly leg but don’t know if that annoyed her more as seemed to be picking it off her feathers!
With feather loss looks like some new one so growing back ?
Il attach some pics , thanks
