My husband still wants to free range them, because it cuts down on the cost of feed. But I tried to explain to him that we are getting only 4 to 6 eggs a day with 16 to 17 laying hens...Yes, hens sure get sneaky with their eggs!![]()
Definitely, if you want eggs, hens need to spend some of their time in the coop and run. Generally most hens lay in the morning, so maybe free range in the afternoons only?My husband still wants to free range them, because it cuts down on the cost of feed. I am so glad they arrived safely! Adorable!14 healthy chicks arrived today from Cackle Hatchery!
Make sure they have enough room and it's not too warm in the brooder. When mine start picking on each other, I lower the temperature 2 degrees. And give them something to do in the brooder. Cut off the side of a cereal box and put things in side for them to scratch and play in...alfalfa leaves, other dried tree leaves, chick starter, sprinkle of grit. Roost bars or branches fron trees, it burns energy and breaks boredom that otherwise turns into picking at toes, eyeballs or pulling feathers...Today some of the biefehelder chicks decided to pick on the lavender ameraucana chicks. I gave them food and tried to give them something shiny to peck at, so hopefully they will stop.
