Thanks! I sent them an email to find out where they got their original stock. Where are you in Sonoma? I'm sort of over the range from you.

Kim

I'm in Sebastopol.

Nice to meet another Californian.
Do you have Dorkings? Would you be interested in splitting an order of Silver Grays from Duane Urch?

I have an order from Duane Urch, I talked to him and he said the most he could provide would probably be 10. I also have an order with McMurray, I heard their stock came from Urch. I also have an order from Sandhill for Reds and Whites. Another from Dick Horstman for Silver Grays and Reds. Also will have some eggs coming from Ed Hart for Whites. All of these will be coming April or later. I'm going to cull heavy from all of them, since my goal is to have good show quality birds that are good dual purpose. I'm mostly interested in their meat qualities, but they need to be decent egg layers too. I will have a lot of extras to sell, or eat. If you're interested in some of the extras, we could talk.

I actually have the same goals as you, with the SGs, but I need to improve what I have so far. If you end up wanting to sell any of the Silver Grays that meet the standard, let me know. I already have a freezer full of SandhillxMontana Dorks that didn't come out well enough for breeding but taste really good.

Hi Kim,

If you have the same goals, maybe we could work out something, so we have similar bloodlines and we could exchange breeding stock. From what I've been learning it is better to line breed, with the occasional outcross, and then bring that back in to the line bred line. This works out better if there is more than one breeder working with the some bloodline. They can then exchange breeding stock (roosters) every three years or so. If you don't already subscribe to the Heritage Large Fowl thread, you should. There are a lot of knowledgeable people on there. I just lurk right now absorbing all the information. There is even an APA judge and he does now what Dorkings are supposed to be like.

Ah yes, that would be my roo your talking about.
Unfortunately as much as I want to have him for dinner he's the only roo I have and I STILL haven't been able to source another!

One of the extremely frustrating things about working with a very rare breed. My birds are 17 weeks now and the girls are starting to get pink so I'm hoping laying isn't too far off. If I can't get a better roo soon I'll either be using the one I've got or putting the ladies in with the Wellie roo for sexlinks till I get one and that seems like a waste.

Someone up the thread said the chicks size takes after the hen? If so that's good news because the ladies are quite a bit bigger than my roo. He has good wide chest and shoulders and good shape but is just smaller over all than I'd like him to be.

I still have to get pics too, must get the camera fixed!
