B.Y.C. Dorking Club!

Does anyone know the approximate length of a Dorking cock bird, that meets the SOP, including tail?

My rooster pens are in the finishing stages and we need to install roosts. I want the roosts far enough back to be out of the way, but don't want tail feathers to touch the coop wall. So, how far from the back do we put the roosts?

This may seem like an odd question, but my current cockerels have damaged their tail feathers because they touch the rear of the coop when they roost at night. I'm imagining a time in the future when I have Dorkings of full size that meet the SOP.

How long would those be? How much space would they need to roost, without damaging their tail feathers?
In my dreams, I see Dorkings nice enough to show.

I'm new to this breed & got my first Silver Gray Dorkings last year. I got 4 chicks that ended up as 3 pullets & 1 cockerel. Well, the cockerel had a bad attitude from the get-go! He went the way of the rest of my meat flock. The thing is, out of my remaining girls, one has no comb or wattles. Has anyone else experienced this?

Sounds like you're ready to start fresh. Batters up!

i'd say 18" minimum, judging from my own roosters and their tails... my own current roosts are about 12" off the wall, which i found recommended, but i do have tail damage on a few. for the girls it's fine. it's the guys who become problems LOL

how old are they now? mine didn't start developing until about 2-3 weeks before they started laying. around 5 months old, maybe a bit older...

also consider the time of year. they may not be in 'the mood' to start laying until it warms up.

This girl is 9 months old now. They have all been laying, no problem. Interesting though, this one lays a tinted egg. The other 2 white. I'm thinking she must be the result of cross breeding. She looks every bit a dorking, just no comb or wattles.

Hey, all. I've been gearing up over here to get ready to bring in some Dorkings; and, I'm starting to look around for where to actually find what I'm wanting. I'm partial to the coloureds; but, I'm not really finding much in the way of information on where/who might possibly have some available this year. Anyone know where I could look? I saw Ed Hart mentioned; but, it looks like he wasn't easy to contact. Is he really the only one? From what I've heard of Sand Hill's quality in the past, I'm a little wary of purchasing from them.

I've found sources for the reds and silver-greys; but, the coloureds are confounding me no end.

Thanks!
