B.Y.C. Dorking Club!

I do hate to say it...I really do...cuz I hate solid white birds with a nearly phobic passion......

But, you do have some lovely Dorkings...almost lovely enough to get me past my phobic passion....almost.
I agree....they are gorgeous. (the ones I can see on your website.)

You are doing a great job with them.

I think if Someone had a lovely manicured yard to go with them and white picket fencing and white trimmed outbuildings...they would be lovely!!!!!

I'm not 'fond" of white animals in general... so, having said that... I noticed something a bit... odd.......

I have embden geese (white)
sebastopol geese (white)
giant pekin ducks (white)
our LGDs are both white
my new eskie puppy is pure white
and I just bought 5 Saanen goats (white again)

I think the universe is trying to tell me white critters aren't bad at all...

sounds like me and black and white barred birds (don't mind crele at all. 8)

my only issue with white, is they don't tend to stay that way around here. virginia red clay has a lot to do with that. LOL

One of the chicks I hatched out is definitely white. and she is already growing feathers. maybe the white thing will grow on me.

I admit...I do love color though. but that's why I have a layer flock. one of every color in there.

This hatch is driving me nuts...it has drawn out to 5 hatching days. they were supposed to all hatch friday, and I have two eggs still in there. I was going to remove them, but I held them up to my ear and could hear the chicks still alive in there! I cant throw away live chicks!

but the ones that hatched last night are not doing well. I think from being in their shells too long. they aren't up and running around yet...splayed a bit. I feel bad because it is not their fault. I am not using the best incubator and with the power outage...sigh. I fear I will have to cull the ones that hatch even if they make it out.

I hate culling. but I know it is necessary. just makes me sad.

But I have 25 healthy chicks...I should just be happy for that

yeah in my experience, late chicks usually don't fare as well as early / on time ones... get some poly-vi-sol (not the one labled plus iron) infant vitamins and give the weak ones a drop in the beak, and add some to the water for a couple days. sometimes that helps kick-start them.

On our front, we're preparing to liquidate almost everything bar the Dorkings and Anconas--we're down to one elite pair of Black Muscovies, which we've decided to sell, even though the male was Super Grand Champion of the New Hampshire Poultry Fanciers Association annual show in 2012. ...
... If we're going to maintain the orchard and keep the gardens and can the food and pretend to have a life, while maintaining the goal of the very best heritage poultry possible, we've just got to hone tight focus, disciplined breeding, and consolidating to expand.

Don't you have a rare strain of Houdans? You're giving up the Houdans?

I can relate to your reason for downsizing. I find it difficult to have much of a life outside the farm since my list of chores is never ending.

I think mine took 2-3 days to hatch. I agree with Karen. My 2 late hatchers are half the size of the others, one is splay legged. I'm happy with the larger chicks, nice wide skulls, very lively.
Congrats on 25 chicks! That's a good number to start out.
