B.Y.C. Dorking Club!

Does anyone on here know of a source for Red Dorkings in or around Arkansas? I have tried hatching shipped eggs twice now with dysmal results. Out of my first shipment of 24 eggs I got one cockerel. Out of the next shipment that are due to hatch on the 27th, I have three still going. Two early quitters. I have terrible results on anything shipped from the East Coast area.

I would love to find someone in AR or OK that I could either pick up eggs or chicks. Thanks for the info.

You might want to try getting chicks shipped from Mr Horstman.... I got 12, and 11 are doing great...

Has Lucky attended any shows? How satisfied are you with his growth, coloring, offspring?

I like Jeanne, she's nice and I don't mean to speak badly of her birds. YMMV

My first and only showing experience was when I took Lucky and a hen to the National Heirloom Expo Heritage Poultry show.
His growth was ok, probably average for the breed as it is today. His weight did not meet Standard, but that is something most of us are still working on. I was happy with his coloring. I had a horrible time with fertility when I was using him. He has a few offspring which I am using now. All my Dorkings have good points and bad points, so I'm trying to combine them now in a way that will produce birds closer to Standard without defects. It's still a work in progress.

Looks like they are trying to pass new regulations and prices on shipping poultry. Has anyone heard anything on this? I thought I would spread the word. I hope this doesn't violate any BYC rules sharing:

Sounds like it's mostly good except for the extra fees of course. Unless I'm missing something it's just the bit about adult birds being restricted to faster shipping options and the addition of the new special handling fee right?

Looks like an additional handling fee per each addressed as shipped... ? Does that mean if there are 25 chicks being shipped there are 25 additional fees? I haven't read it entirely as I'm at work. I was hoping someone had already broken down the new charges... ???

the new regs basically just add $$. the birds are already supposed to go 2=3 day shipping (they don't offer overnight for most areas). and it addresses nothing concerning live arrival of those birds. birds die? you're still SOL. they won't insure them, or pay up even if insurance is purchased.

I purchased a Dorking rooster cheap recently and he doesn't like to mate. My guess the fertilized rate for Dorking may be on the low side.

that is kind of a stretch based on one example. are there others you have had problems with?

I am not currently breeding, but the red roo I have with two girls in my quarantine pen is DEFINITELY doing his job. Every egg I crack open has a bullseye.
