Thank you for the info.

One of my hens is almost 3 year old... one is a year old, and one is just starting to lay. My Rooster is over a year old. Didn't do squat last year either. We have plenty of light now, and the snow is melting fast. All 3 are laying, but not fertile. I've upped their pellets to the 20% (it's almost $20/50# sack now) and will supplement with other sources of protein. I will make up some oatmeal for them... and I have whole flaxseed.

They ARE slow to mature, but this is their second season... they're about to be cut from the program if they don't produce something soon!! The way feed prices are going up, I can't afford to feed many freeloaders, no matter HOW much I love the breed.

Where did you get your birds? If your ever on Vancouver Island I know of several good breeders.

Most are from Jeanne Fingar's flock, one is from Wolfkim here on BYC. I broke down and ordered a few from MMH, just to see what I wind up with (I filled extra space in an order! shhhh... don't tell hubby!!) LOL!

It's hard to improve on your flock when you're not getting offspring...

I haven't been to Vancouver Island since 1993... can they meet me at the border?? LOL!

Good poll, lots of questions.

I am hoping I have fertile eggs.

They are going in the 'bator tomorrow so I'll be sad if they're not. Only one girl laying to far, the one with correct toes too so if I get a roo with nice toes he'll be a definite contender for breeding next spring. Anyone else here setting for Mahonri's Easter hatch? There is so many participants I can't keep track.

That would be fun explaining to the border guards... Aaaah, I'm meeting someone to exchange chickens... Good luck with that!!!! LOL

If I could meet you at the border I would

Where there is a will there is a way to get hatching eggs over the border.

If you cross the border with "hard boiled eggs" in your pic-i-nic basket, I could relieve you of them on the other side...

If the seller has the Canadian equivalent of NPIP testing can you do it? I live close enough to a few border crossings that I should see what to do to be able to sell to Canada. I know locals who have sold to people taking them across the border.

Legally, you can take two dozen eggs for eating across the border. Figure out what happens with that bit of info

It's ok... I never used to be patient, but I'm learning.

It's still hovering around freezing here, so I wouldn't try to ship eggs for at least a few more weeks.
big_smile.png
Oh, and I'm willing to do fertility testing, too...
