B.Y.C. Dorking Club!

Pics
Well my Dorking egg from the Easter hatch did hatch and is now peeping LOUDLY all alone in the bator, I'm trying to find some local chicks to buy for company.

I tried to look last night and sex it but it wasn't dry and looked funny so I thought I'd wait till today. I pulled it out and looked at it, looked at it some more, took it out to look at it in the sun near the window to be sure... it's a GOLD baby!!!

WTH? My SG Dorkings should NOT produce gold babies, I don't have a red roo....... oh oh

It would appear I hadn't removed the Wellie roo soon enough and I have a sexlink Welly x Dorking pullet.

Not the end of the world but not what I was hoping for either. Least it's a girl!

It would theoretically be possible for SG Dorkings to throw Red chicks if a Red Dorking had been in the pedigree and you got the stars aligned right, but your Wellie is probably the most likely culprit

TGRlily sent eggs a couple weeks ago and I'm waiting on baited breath for them to hatch. I've go a very special momma hen setting outside who is going to inherit these babies. I lost 3 of the Reds that came from Sandhill when the mom's abandoned them for some weird reason... so strange. Luckily I went out in time to put chicks back into their brooder pen and return the mothers to their task. They have been fine since then... Who knows what happened. ???

Anyway, I am so excited about these babies and am thinking this is going to be an awesome flock of Red Dorkings!!!!!! YEAH!

I'm afraid to candle Jen's eggs again... the airsac was disrupted during shipping, so I'm trying to be good and not touch them... where's the "sit on your hands" smilie?

I hear ya! I had a couple of wonky aircells... they made it out just fine!

The USPS must've sent your eggs either with Fedex or across Canada -- they aren't being scanned at any way-points.

Rudy, really enjoyed the website and the images of your Dorkings as well as the Cochins. I remember George Opperman and what at that time were very large partridge. But back to your red Dorkings. Nice, solid, deep bodied birds. Their young will be a lot of fun to watch develop. I was surprised at the idea of the reds having a reputation for lacking vigor etc.. That sure wasn't the case when we had them though it was some time ago. Back then a lot of the red Dorking folks kept, bred and actually used their Dorkings. They were a homestead breed for many and long before the term became fashionable. Great looking, meat, plenty of eggs and there were some, like a lady in upstate New York, who hatched all their youngsters under the broody Dorking hens. I see Joe has mentioned the rose combed colored and that was another interesting thing about the reds. There seemed to be nearly as many rose combed birds as the single combs.

Yeah, would be nice if it was a fluke Red Dorking but Mr Wellie will be the dad. I'd forgotten till I was looking at my notes this morning that one of the Dorking ladies had managed to end up in his pen while he was in solitary. I had a temp pen set up in my main pen so I'll bet that's when it happened.

Easter will be headed to the Easter Egger pen once she's grown. Will be interesting to see what color eggs she produces.
