Rudy - I am going to PM you, I think I may have a customer for you

I cannot keep up with my demand here in Michigan for Dorkings, so I will need a little back up from the great state of Indiana

Once I get my head around exactly who is looking for what, I will let you know.

Well my Dorking eggs hatched but there appears to be a problem. I should have had either pure Dorkings or black Barred PR x SG Dorkings. What I ended up with is 3 black chicks without barring and 3 chicks without proper chipmunk stripes.

I will post pics of the chicks but I'm scratching my head over the results.

Also interesting looking at their toes, there is only one decent set among them. I guess being crosses doesn't help but roughly what % of pure chicks hatched have good toes? I've read expression is quite variable and I'm intrigued.

Got to get the growers out of my breeding pens and set up my Dorkings in private accommodation, I want some pure babies!

Is the Barred Rock a male or female? I think if the BR is a female, the pullets will be solid black. I would imagine the males would have the white head spot.

The chicks I've hatched from my original flock have had (so far!) consistently good toes. That's been variable in chicks I've hatched from other people's stock, though. Although they've all had 5 toes, they've had differences in separation & placement.

Echo here. My toes have been consistently good. No 4 toed birds at all and I've been checking

5 is dominant to 4 so if your birds are homozygous dominant 5 toed, no 4s should ever hatch. If you cross in a 4 toed bird, and your birds weren't actually very dominant, you could see quite a few 4 toed birds. I would also guess that when heterozygous, it expresses a little differently and is not as well defined, but I'm not sure. Maybe some day I'll have some mess ups to tell you about and learn from...

When I crossed a Red Dorking Rooster over a Dominique hen, I got 3 chicks. The Cockerel was hatched with the headspot, but only 4 toes. The pullets hatched black with 5 toes & dark legs. One pullet is feathering out pure black, the other has some red ticking. The cockerel is barred/cuckoo with yellow legs, but he's darker than a Dominique cockerel at the same age.
