B.Y.C. Dorking Club!

I'm considering getting Dorkings this year, but I have questions first that I hope someone here can help me with.

Is the five-toed-feet gene dominant?
And -- there are another couple of flocks around here who have different owners (who might not be pleased with five-toed-ness,) and all the chickens free range, so if the rooster were to mate a four-toed hen, what is the chance that the chicks would be five-toed/carry the five-toed genes?

Five toed trait is called polydactyl. It is an incomplete dominant trait. When crossing 5 toed and 4 toed birds with each other (sex of each does not matter) in the first generation you will get close to an even mix off offspring with 5 toes on both feet, or 4 toes on both feet, or 5 on one and 4 toes on the other and chicks with a mixture and partial 5 toed with the fifth toe actually branching off the 4th toe. Done this cross many many times. If possible Only keep the 5 toed birds for breeders, however, if crossing the mixed offspring back to homozygous 5 toed parents it is not terribly difficult to get back to all 5 toed birds. Then you just deal with quality of toe arrangement.

If I recall correctly, he was hoping for only 4 toed birds from the cross. He thought his clients/neighbors wouldn't like 5 toed birds. I love them! :D

I'm heading for the Northeastern Poultry Congress poultry show in MA tomorrow. Lots of breeds exhabitated and some for sale. I'd like to get a trio of Rosecomb red Dorkings. Are there any BYCers there that might have some nice RC Red Dorkings for sale? I wish I'd asked this earlier. I leave tomorrow at 5am.

Got my eggs from Mr Hotstman in yesterday. Incubator is set up and stabilizing and I plan to set the eggs tomorrow morning! I am so excited! I ordered 24 eggs and he sent 30. All arrived in good shape but the largest one broke when I took it out of the foam. Its shell seemed to be a little thinner than the rest. But the other 29 look great. Hopefully we will have a good hatch!!
