had a good day today... attended the VPBA show (didn't show just went up). there were no dorkings at all! but i placed my 3 sg girls in their new owner's hands, sold 3 of the chicks I took with me, and had a nice long talk with Craig Russell. Showed him pics of my birds, he looked over the sg's and liked the one girl that was my own breeding the best. these 3 I sold are the smallest of the girls I kept, and he was impressed with them and the pics i showed him, overall, I think.

when he comes back down this way in the spring i'm hoping to get a couple more red roos from him, and maybe a colored roo or pair to work with.

Our Dorks came from MM, at this point they are still young and putting out small - small-medium eggshell white eggs. We have 8 hen's and get around 3-4 eggs per day. My girl's are beyond sweet and "our" roos are just not as niçe. We'll leave one and find home's for the boys or the freezer.

We have been wet and cold here in NM and at 8,000' COLD! We have a heat lamp and heated water feeder.

No grass so they seem to stay dry. All but their feet.

They really are fun! And entering to watch with scraps. Really a beautiful breed.

@ Sydney Acres thanks so much for such a detailed reply! I've been digging for good feeder ideas for the big coop, and your information has helped me narrow down some of my potentials. I will definitely incorporate portability into the design after reading your reply.

Hi, Im new to the dorking thread. I bought some eggs and put them in the bater today. Reds. I wanted to offer a suggestion until you can fix your feed issue. I used to do rescue and had some heavy dog crocks that I bought for some rescue rabbits. The chickens cant tip them over and actually catch them standing on the edges. I place them out of the way on the side of the run and so far no one has pooped in them. One has food in it and the other has oyster shell. It could be a temporary fix for you until you come up with something else.

and some good news of my own! I don't have to pray my gimp red dorking roo is able to breed any more! he'll stick around because I like him, and for 'just in case' (and it would be nice to have chicks from another line...) but I just acquired a roo of my own breeding (sold the eggs) from my red dorking roo I lost last summer (aka Thing2)...

so I introduce to you, Thing2.5.

he's a bit crowded at the moment, in a small quarantine cage, but also suffered a bit of frostbite on his comb already this year, so i'll give him a chance to heal that up before he goes back outside.

Saz, you know his hatch date so I can put that in the records?

Yep, he was one of the first chicks I got from you, I believe it was late Feb around the 26th. I picked them up in mid-March and he hadn't yet gotten coloring in on his breast feathers. I have several pictures of him along the way, would be interesting to see how he's developed over time, if I can, I'll get the pictures together for you! So happy you're happy!

Very Sad morning! My husband went out to chemist on the chickens only to find them all dead! Something got in and killed them all. Took one with it!
Yesterday 4 of the roosters got butchered for the freezer. I think a fox took advantage of them being without extra protection so as of now we are without chickens all together! Very sad!
