I got my big box of Red Dorking eggs today!!!!!

I'm going to set them in the morning & I'm soooo excited!

I should take some new pics of my reds... They're beautiful!

It looks like you have a nice beginning. If you're going to try to breed both varieties, you'll have to separate them, of course. Of the four individuals you show, the two hens and the colored cock are the strongest. They all need bulking up, or breeding up, but that's to be expected. If you read up on the ALBC website about breeding heritage fowl, it will be an excellent tool.

Your black cockerel is more questionable. Of course, one picture is only one picture, but if you look at the outline of the bird, you;ll notice that he has a distinctly triangular typre, or shape. Insofar as breed is defined by type, he doesn't really match the profile of a Dorking. In your stead, I'd question using him in a breeding pen--of course, this is assuming that he is that triangular. If he is, he'll undermine your efforts in an important way. You can sstart with your RC Colored cock and go from there.

Yellow House Farm, Thank you so much for your encouragement and taking the time to critique my little flock of Dorkings!

I agree with you on your assesment of my black boy... he really is too triangular. I tried to choose pictures that really do represent how they look in person.

I've ordered several diferent colors of Dorking chicks this year so I can live with them while deciding which I like best. I really love the Coloreds, so I'll probably settle on them. I'm supposed to get some Colored chicks from Sand Hill later on in the year, so hopefully I'll get some nice girls to go with my boy.

Question: What happens if I breed SC hens to a RC cock (or vice versa)? Will it mess up the combs and make them neither 1 nor the other, or is 1 just dominant over the other? Is it an acceptable breeding practice to interbreed the 2 comb types?

We had snow all day today, so I was not able to get my reds out for a photo shoot - hopefully soon. You will have to cut the girls a bit of slack, as Llewelyn is a bit rough on them, they are both sporting a blue kote hairdo right now. Young Roosters!

Has anyone had any difficulty with Dorkings and weak shells? I am having problems with a couple of mine having problems. I have several other breeds and none of them are having problems.
