Hey y'all. My name is Sean and I can't wait to start my suburban chicken paradise here in Raleigh, NC. I live in a ranch style home on a full walk-out basement. My bedroom juts out over my backyard, supported by 8-ft posts, which I've started converting into my chicken area (225 sq. ft.)I've begun to frame-in between the post, and added a screen door for access. Since the existing height is eight feet, I'm able to efficiently use my treated 2x4 studs without any waste. I plan on applying welded hardware cloth, using a five-foot roll; burying 12" in the ground and continuing up to my mid-rail. From the mid-rail to the top, I'll be using chicken wire. I'm not sure if I need a fully-enclosed coop inside the area, as it never gets too cold, but again, I'm not sure and could use a little guidance.

I prefer putting my chickens in a fully enclosed coop, at least for predator protection at night. But have a look in the Coop & Run - Design, Construction, & Maintenance section and see what the other members think and what they've done.

Welcome to BYC. Like Sumi I recommend a fully enclosed coop to be utilized for evening protection from predators.

Thanks for the guidance. I decided to build a fully-enclosed coup, and its been easy to build (not too expensive), although I'm not finished. I can't wait to get my hens. This is going to be fun!
