Hi everyone! We have been surfing the web for hours. It all started with the idea of growing our own food, making a simple European bread, etc. We are each others best friends and in the autumn of our lives. We travel in the winters to escape the cold of the north woods. This coming year we will be staying home and decided to have the garden we always wanted and some chickens for meat and eggs and just plan fun and a reason to get outside more often. Picking mushrooms intrigues us . We hunt and fish to allow us to not go to the grocery stores as often as some folks. Just plain pioneer living in modern times is what we are after as a way to live longer and healthier . We are interested in the older breeds of chickens... A term we have read this morning is a dual purpose breed. we would love to hear about them and anyone that might sell and ship us some chicks come spring.. AS the title states we are newbies for sure. we live in the far North of Michigan. We will be looking at building chicken coops. yards etc. any advice will be truly appreciated.
Thank you
David and Vicki

Hi David and vicki and welcome to BYC.

A dual purpose bird simply describes a breed that will give you a decent amount of eggs and have a respectable slaughter weight. There are many to choose from and I'd suggest that you check out the breeds section of byc for further details.

In terms of acquiring some birds, you may wish to check out your state thread (type your state in the search bar) as other byc members will be able to point you the right direction.

There's a coop forum here with lots of alternatives for building them - hopefully they'll give you some inspiration.

Good luck with your new chicken adventure

All the best

Thank you. we have already discovered the discussions in those forums and are enjoying it all.

Hi David & Vicki,

You can find your state thread using this link:

It can be helpful to chat with others close to you to find breeders, tips on dealing with weather issues, swap meets, etc.

There are a lot of great dual purpose chickens to select your flock from. The Learning Center has a good article in it on how to find the breeds that best suit your needs:

Have fun exploring BYC, there are a lot of forums for just about every interest and some very friendly, helpful members here.

Thanks for joining us!
