So I took in this stray "wild" cat about two weeks ago because she was obviously pregnant. She started out very wild but now she lets me pet her and is alot more tame. Today she has seemed really restless and she only ate a very small amount now she is having discharge since about 6 today. I am hoping everything will go fine and she wont need any help but this is my first time with a pregnant cat so I have a couple questions. Should I check up on her during the night or leave her alone? and how soon can I touch the kitties after they are born? Thought I would add she will be getting spayed as soon as the babies are weaned. The babies also will be looking for new homes when they are old enough so if you want a new kitty I will have some.

Ok I am really worried I went to check on her right after I posted this and there appeared to be a tail sticking out of her in a bubble of fluid. She burst the fluid but there has not been any progress since and her contractions are not very close together. Everything I have read says this is not normal but I dont know what to do.

You can grasp the tail and gently assist with the delivery. Sometimes the bit of extra strength from you will help pop that kitten right out.

Now two things:

1) if a bit of gentle pressure doesnt get the kitten out you will need to take her to a vet for an emergency c-section

and

2) I was once helping a lady out over the phone, in the same situation, and she was VERY upset when she tried to pull the kitten out, and the tail came off. This happens if the kitten is already dead, so just be prepared.

Thank you for your advice. I tried to help by gently pulling on the tail when she contracted and half the tail did come off.

I was so scared I just wanted momma to be ok since I thought the kitten was dead since it has been sticking out since 9:50. I went back to the bedroom to give her some privacy and when I went back she had delivered the kitten without the tail and he/she was alive. And I saw another kitten coming out but it was face first so now there are two. I think I have worried and prayed more over this cat than I have in along time. Hopefully she will be ok.
The first one was suckling when I was there I guess I should put antibiotic ointment on his tail or do you think I just need to take him to the vet tommorrow?

Oh and I will get pics tommorrow once things settle down a little bit. I am shaking so bad now the pics wouldnt look to clear anyway.

a little touch of a/b wont go astray on the tail, but I would give mumma a day or two with him before you put it on - she may not like the smell of it, and the last thing you want to do is hand raise a newborn

I agree with the above post. The kitten will be fine, but wait a few days until the mom is settled in, then you can start to apply Neosporin. The mom will probably lick it off when doing her normal cleaning, but that's ok. It will heal faster than you think...kind of like when a puppy gets it's tail docked. Just keep an eye on it and if you think it is getting worse, a call to the vet wouldn't hurt just to get an opinion.

Can't wait to see pics of the babies!

If the tail wound is dry I would not put anything on it. The mom will just lick it off.

When we dock puppies, we do not treat the wound, we just let it heal.

Good luck with the babies!
