I think most feed stores that stock chicks will add your order to theirs if you want something they don't usually order. That's what I'll do next time I want chicks-- I'll never have room for 25+ chicks!

I stopped in my local feed store today to check and see when they were ordering again. They will add my order to theirs. Just so happens they are getting a shipment in tomorrow. Guess what? Yeah, I did it..I'm picking up 2 Buff Cochins, 2 Mottled Houdans, and 2 White Crested Black Polish tomorrow. And they're not even what I wanted to order! Man, somebody stop me...

LOL, AF! It's so hard to resist cute little chirpy fuzzballs, isn't it? I hope your Polish are nicer than ours were--I've never had a good-tempered Polish, but you know, it could just be coincidence that all of ours were such buttheads. In fact, one of my earliest memories is getting flogged by a Polish rooster and running crying to my father, who comforted me, bandaged up the cuts and scrapes (bruises all up my legs from his wings and deep scratches from his talons, spurs, and beak--anyone who thinks a chicken can't hurt you is wrong!), then marched down to the coop and wrung that rooster's neck. We ate him that night. Hmm... maybe the other Polish we got after that were reacting to my guardedness around them, and that's why they turned nasty? Who knows!

Here's hoping that your Polish are sweet, gentle, loveable featherbabies!

Man you guys are Lucky!!!! I cant find a single feed store that has any chicks!! They all just place orders for you, never have any on hand! Heck I can order chicks on my own, but where is the fun in that?? I wanna walk into a store and find cute little cheepers!!!

aran -- For the pasty butt, besides adding the oatmeal to their feed, you can put some dirt in the brooder for them. You can buy play sand, baby chick grit, or just some dirt from your yard.

I have found that it really helps to prevent pasty butts. Of course...if they have it, you still have to continue to clean them up.

Just thought you might like another suggestion.

Did anyone suggest putting Vaseline on their butts yet? It keeps the yuck from sticking. You can also trim their butt fuzz. It doesn't cure the problem--all these other great suggestions will help with that--but it sure makes cleanup easier.

so heres the update...
-Ideal refunded the $8.58 for the chicks that have passed away.
-Local feed stores are sold out and told me they are not getting more in this year.
-two of the remaining chicks have the poo on their butts..washing it off is SOOOOOOOOOO much fun...NOT.
-->will try the ground oatmeal thing.

-AF--> you need to stop buying more chickens!!!!!!!!!!

hey Aran- that's great that Ideal refunded you. I was sure they would. Of course it doesn't really help when you wanted chicks, but sadly, shipping just goes that way sometimes.

Trying the oatmeal is a good idea. You can also mix some yogurt (plain, with cultures) with some starter to a crumbly consistency and see if they will eat it. Mine will eat it only if it resembles the starter- they wont touch it if it is very wet. Vaseline on the behind will help keep the poo from sticking to the feathers. Good luck with this, I know it is not the most fun part of keeping chickens, but think of it this way...the chicks will grow up to be that much more used to you for all the handling they are going through right now.

And yes, I know I need to stop, but there are a couple more breeds I'd like to have...LOL. Soon, my family is going to have to move into the coop and give the house over to the chickens..

actually its not that bad...i get to play with the chicks at least and my 6yr old son thinks its hilarious dad playing in the chicken poo!

If I were to order more chicks now they would be a couple weeks younger than this current bunch...thats bad right?

Was thinking bout some barred rocks, buff orps and maybe some more of the RI whites although im worried after these last ones died.

what do you think AF?
