babies not on the morning truck:(

Aran I live in upstate NY and we belong to 4-h and there are a few families hatching chicks. What are you looking for? I know what you mean about not finding many at feed stores. We actually just hatched our first chicks here at home last Mon. I have 7 buff orpingtons and I just moved 5 more eggs into our hatcher.(really just a second incubator without a turnerand higher humidity) One hatched yesterday and I am hopeful more will soon.If not i have about a dozen more going in on Fri I think. We did an early shipment from MM in March and we had all of the first shipment die they replaced them but it was extremely sad.The second shipment we lost about 6 . Still very sad that,s why we are incubating. Let me know if we can help you or hook you up with someone. Enjoy our rare sunshine.Mommyp

thats great MP thanks very much for the info. I totally understand the idea of incubating..if I had the time or the money to invest in an incubator I would but that will have to wait 4 more months til i finish residency:p

Im in Rochester...where are you at?

Aran, first of all the chicks guarantee is 4 days i think past the hatch date so they should at least reimburse you. Call them tomorrow morning, do not email.
Have you looked into meyer, they are the closest in the east and have awesome chicks and wonderful customer service. I have an order coming this week from there. Our feed stores only buy from there, the shipping is certainly cheaper as well thean mm or ideal. WWW.meyerhatchery.com

Wow..isn't that great that mommyp noticed this thread! Hopefully she'll be able to hook you up with chicks in your area. (Heee..that sounds funny, re-reading

). But really, that should work out so much better than shipping from so far away. Maybe Ideal could credit you (even if it is a relatively small $ amount) and you can use the credit towards gro-gel, or similar products, rather than chicks-assuming they offer products like that, I don't really know.

I also spoke with Cherith several times on the phone and via email, I thought she was just wonderful!

I'm sorry. I deserve the smack. I should not have gone off the way I did. Please forgive me. I get so upset sometimes when people who are new to this hobby are so hurt and discouraged because of a hatchery problem. It seems that I have read so many problems with hatcheries this spring. Anyway, I apologize......

I have deleted my former post as it is totally out of line.

(Rob, I do love the delete feature!)

Becky- You're right, there have been a lot of posts about hatchery problems lately. I totally understand the frustration. I was so lucky to have had such good luck with my shipment. I really did not expect all my chicks to survive, and if they hadn't, I know I would have had a dilema on my hands..order more and risk the loss again, or just forget the whole thing..sheesh! And the many people that are not in areas that have chicks available locally...girl, I do understand completely. No apologies necessary, imo.

aran - If you are still having pasty bottom problems, try adding some ground, uncooked oatmeal to their starter. Use the old-fashioned kind, not the instant.
I hope mommyp can help!

I found out by calling 800-ASK-USPS, that 2 day Priority is sent on Sat to PostOffice by Sunday and will sit there until Monday Morning, even though it has on the label "call upon arrival", I just couldn't wait until Monday for mine...I went to the Post Office on Sunday and knocked on the door and a kind man went an looked for the chicks out on the dock, he came back with them, and said he could hear other boxes peeping too...If I order again I am going to insist on Express mail if it is an option, that way they can track the package and they can find it on a Sunday. I am soo sorry for your loss, I was pretty anxious about ordering my chicks through the mail and they are all OK so far, hope your future is brighter and you can hook up with someone local...

The chicks should survive 72 hrs after hatch but I just couldn't wait until Monday...they hatched Sat and I picked them up at the post office Sunday, or they would have called me monday morning.
