Ha! I am most certainly not the only enabler around here!! LOL

Hey, if you can't find any Buff Orp's, take a look at Buff Cochins- they have the same coloring and have feathered feet. I just got 2 of 'em yesterday.

They are really docile and are great broodies, if you think you want to ever let them hatch out chicks. Also, the Gold Laced and Partridge Cochins somewhat resemble Gold Laced Wyandottes - you can take a look at feathersite and see what you think.

My goal is also to have a colorful flock of layers AND I wanted to be able to let the hens hatch some chicks, as well.

Just a thought, you're up there where it's cooold in the winter- feather footed varieties tolerate lower temperatures better than the others.

19 birds ought to ship well- ask Ideal about it when you order. They added to my order to total 17 birds in the box, but then that was to South Texas. If they plan to add extras- you can at least then decide if you want to purchase a few more pullets, rather than get roo's. Pullets are way easier to re-home.

I'm soo excited for you! Let us know what you end up deciding on.

ok here is what im thinking now:
3x white cochins ( just cuz they are cute) ( pullets)
4x buff orps ( pullets)
4xsalmon faverolle pullets and 1x male
4x silver spang hamburg (pullets)

That would bring my flock to 25 + any extras they send which is MORE than enough ( for now;)

from ideal this whole order is $47 including shipping...pretty darn good!

no hang on that only brings me to 23! woohoo 2 more to order!
--> ok so i will add another couple of those white cochins which are crazy cute...do they lay eggs you can eat?

HA HAA!! Yep, you are certifiably hooked!

Yes, you can eat the Cochin eggs, silly. And I am so jealous of the SF's- a breed I do not yet have any of. Hmm...maybe I can add to my order for next week...

I think you'll be happy with the Cochins- they are really beautiful birds.

coolness yeppers those sf are awesome looking..specially the rooster! The cochins are too cute...my kid will love em.

I have just emailed Ideal to see if they have those chicks available or if there is a waiting time for them.

Hey AF, I have a really large canvas "shed" which is essentially a huge dome with zip doors at each end which is a permanent outside shed on the farm. would this be ok to use as a brooder with a heat lamp inside it for when the chicks get too big to be in the plastic 70G tank? Also when do i cut their wings? ( AM NOT LOOKING FORWARD TO THAT!)

Well, I would be concerned about security, it being canvas and all. Is it protected in any way- say, inside a fence? Assuming it is secure and predators are not a problem, I don't see why you couldn't use it. As long as the chicks have the essentials (correct temp, food, water, safety), pretty much anything can house them.

As far as clipping wings- I really don't know. I haven't done it and don't plan to. My birds don't get complete free range freedom because we have just way too many predators. I have their entire yard covered with fencing, so flying over is not an option for them. I also tend to think that if for some reason they are under attack, flying to a higher place may be their only means of survival.
My guess, however, is that you can clip their wings as soon as they have feathered out completely and are able to get themselves off the ground. It should not be a big hassle though, if you handle your birds frequently when they are small. It is not a painful ordeal for them. Someone with more experience will probably chime in soon. Or, a quick search ought to give us the answers. I'll see what I can find.

My computer just hiccupped...I hope you don't get a double post!

Aran, you have me scratching my head...you didn't want the Ideal 236 because of their personality (don't blame you) but they are standard birds, and are disappointed because Ideal is sold out of Bantum Buff Orps. Are you mixing Bantams and Standards? Does that work well?

Just wasting too much time thinking about birds again today...

Aran had thought Ideal was out of the Buff Orps, but had mistakenly looked at the bantams, rather than standards. I do not think he is ordering any bantams.
