It wasn't hers, it was a Maran's. There was only 1 that was hers.Oh, I'm so sorry.

This was exactly what we were wondering about, because she seemed panicked when she saw it. She has been excellent with the other chicks since it happened. She was even good with that one one we gave it back to her, but unfortunately the damage must've been too extensive.Sometimes first time broodies don't switch right away from defending the clutch to caring for the first hatchling, and they peck the first chick as if it was to kill a mouse or similar intruder. They even throw it as far away from the nest as they can. These pecken on first chicks often get very badly hurt and don't recover.
But usually, after the first chick the first time broodies will switch and the rest of the chicks hatch well cared for.
There's another maran chick and she's been completely fine with that one, so I'm not surethat might have been why
