Baby blue jays like to stay babies LOL they follow you around for days begging for you to feed them crazy funny.
I do hope you contact a rehab and give it a chance at life. I know all the stuff about letting nature take its course. And I could go on about the damage we have done to nature and wildlife I will save you from my rant LOL let's leave it at I tend to like animals better then most people. All I can say is do what you feel is right

I would just like to say like with the nest in the house that got destryoed ,, what part of nature is that , I do not bealve that mother nature made bulldozers and she certainly didnt make houses , we can not take ov er every wild place in a city and then scream LET NATURE TAKE ITS COUSRSE there is nothing natrual about concreate or black top or cars or trucks or garbage . Its my opnion that about 90% of the stuff that happens to cause hurt or orphened wild life and birds is our fualt and we cant hide behind nature to cope when that causes death .
'climbs off soap box'

And rehab or wildlife vet would be a best bet for that guy. I have the privliage of knowing a wild life rehabiltor / vet to take animals to.

The last thing we need is another government agency that relegates our compassion. How did we ever manage to get this far without the government telling us how stupid and incompetent we are? lol

Anyway, I've been in your situation before, Jarhead and my advice is follow your natural instincts. Most of the "real" advice you've gotten on feeding and caring for this baby is pretty much on the spot. Obviously, you won't be able to teach it to fly, but it has been my experience that when I have released injured birds they do pretty well on their own.
It certainly has more of a chance at survival by your caring for it than the "let nature take its course" retort, which is basically a death sentence for the animal.

Follow your gut feelings and I wish you and your fledgling the best.

i used pedagree dry dog food, dry cat food ,wet cat food small amount of chicken layers feed, foe the one's i rased and they did great one cup dry dog,one half cup dry cat, one table spoon wet cat two table spoon of chicken feed non medicated but if you have a choice plz find a rehab for it :) oh! and water blend it until it's like pudding

Well I have been breaking the law for goodness knows how long.

What I have done with baby blue jays specifically is buy a jar of meat babyfood. Mix it with some water and some dirt from outside and use either a syringe or even a qtip and feed them. The ones I used this method on all made it and were able to fly off when the time was right. As mentioned by another poster, they are very sweet little guys and will grow very attached to you. Mine would follow me around outside when I took it out to learn to fly.

One thing to watch out for with baby birds is lice/mites. I have noticed that is a problem when I have taken care of some over the years. It's been a while since our property currently has no big trees for nesting, but I used to use flea dip back in the day, diluted alot and it seemed to work without hurting the birds. Dried them off with a blow dryer.

Good luck whatever you do.

Government and compassion.....ha....that makes me laugh.....no such thing.

Ha, perhaps. When I pop in and out of the site I don't always check the dates. My mistake.

Two baby bluejays were found under my mango tree early in the morning. Who knows how long they have been there? It is long Memorial day weekend. I told myself my priority is to keep them alive and let God worry about the rest. First I wore my bath loofa glove which provides good grib to pick them up. Then I dumped all the dirt from one of my long narrow planters hoping the holes in the planter is enough to drain. My goal is to simulate the nest environment for the babies to survive. I plucked some leaves from my cherry bush to form a dry layer of organic material. One of the babies cried out loud when I was trying to save them and mamma heard him gave me an airstrike!! But I saved them. I tucked the planter in between the palm frons and mamma knows where they are and she was standing on the edge feeding them. I felt honored being touched by Blue Jay Mamma. She finally figured out I'm helping her. See pictures -->

Mom is feeding them from the edge! Hope they can survive.

This is the best information I've found on what to do if you find a baby bird. It's by a vet.
