I am trying to incorporate my new baby flock of 5 (6.5 weeks-old) with my 3 hens. I have done a bit of look dont touch, and two supervised free visits in the run. Completely unexpectedly, one of my babies (white maran) is pecking my 1 year old hens in the face! She is really attacking my extremely docile (and stupid) Blue Orpington. At one point she bit onto her wattle and hung there!!

Is she going to kill my beautiful, sweet, dumb Blue? I am new at this and really just want to give the tiny bully away :( It breaks my heart to see my older girls get bullied - they're pets and I'm really attached. I've never seen 'pecking order' behavior out of my 3. Is that all this is? My other two big girls are lavender orpingtons, but they are smart girls and run away from the tiny bully.
Please help :(

Yikes! That is one bold little chick. I have never seen a young chick attack an older hen, usually it is the other way around.

Aw, poor sweet Blue! Just trying to live her little life and be a chicken and she gets attacked out of nowhere! I’m sure someone will have some good advice for you.

I don't know anything about this, But I did read they should be in their own pen, within the pen of the other chickens for a couple of weeks. Then let them be together. I am hoping for a smooth transition! Now I am a little concerned. I did not think I would even do this step unitill they are 10 weeks old. I want to make sure the nights are not too cold when I put them outside. If it is warm in May, I will take them out for playtime in their seperate area in the late after noons and on the weekends and bring them in at night. I work an hour away from home and I don't want them out when I am not there.

I am anxious to hear what other people think about this problem!

i really thought it would be the other way around as well. I was being so protective of the babies. I made a 'chick' escape hatch in their box and everything. But my poor Blue baby (Piper) has nowhere to escape to :( She's carrying 8 lbs of fluff around after all!

Yeah, I'm thinking I will have to pen them off for longer. Geez, I was really hoping that I could do this the easy way :barnie

It is really sad to watch. She is so beautiful and huge (8 lbs) and passive. She's always the girl that the kids pet and pick up and carry around like a doll. She doesn't deserve this :hit
