Baby chick bullying older hen :( Advice needed

Hello from OH!

Good luck!

Just FYI, when our momma hen has adopted chicks, it is pretty common for the chicks to be curious about momma’s wattles, even “bite” and hang on for a moment or two. So that may have been curiosity! However, chickens always have to work out that pecking order!

That is good news. I think a 16 yo committed to FFA would be a fine choice to care for your birds in your absence.

My fear is I’d have to kill someone who didn’t properly care for my animals.

*Quick story - a coworker of mine was telling me about her 21 yo daughter being asked to care for some horses while the owners (friends of my coworker) were away. As she was relaying the story to me she was somewhat giggling as she told me her friend was upset to come home and find cigarette butts, empty beer cans and empty water barrels.  If that wasn’t enough to completely put me over the edge, she stupidly continued the story with, “...the barrels had even been crushed in.” I have no idea what she could find remotely amusing about the fact her daughter was just plain sorry, to put it mildly. I suppose the poor horses were so thirsty they were pawing at the barrels (plastic I guess) trying to get water. I told her to please stop, I did not want to hear any more. And to beat it all she knew I had horses. I told her those people had every right to be upset and she had better be thankful they didn’t press charges. You talk about livid! I was seeing red and smoke was coming out my ears!

Moral of the quick story: I don’t ever go on vacation. Nah, sometimes I have only because my son is there to take over the farm responsibilities. Always be careful with who you leave in charge.

Oh my goodness that story!! AHH! I completely agree with you. She has chicken sat for me before and all went well, but I asked for daily pictures :clap
