I'm a new mom to baby chicks... They are about 5-6 days old (not exactly sure which day they were born at Dunlap hatchery) but I got them up here to the resort last night after my manager had them for 2 nights in Boise. We have 15 chicks of different breeds (and I don't know which are which other than the silkie - which is not the one in question) ... the problem is with one of the smaller black ones. This afternoon we noticed a spot on it's neck and thought it was maybe getting pecked or is it called picked at? But upon holding it this evening it was clear that it has a very large tumor (size of a gumball) on the back and right side of it's neck. (and feels like there may be smaller tumors or lumps in other places as well.) I thought it had crusty butt and gave it a warm bath to loosen a hard thing on it's backside and managed to wipe off a crusty nub that might have been a tumor or might have been it's umbilical nub!? (see nub in photos) I hadn't read about them having an umbilical nub until after it came off. I thought it was a little tumor because it could come off and clearly wasn't sealing her butt cuz she pooped just fine in the sink. The area wasn't bleeding but was a little pink but I got her dried off and she seems fine now - can hardly find the nub in the dried baby feathers. But the neck growth is very prominent and seems to be growing quickly. (I didn't notice it last night but maybe I just missed it with all the new excitement.) Seems unmistakeably large now. !?!
What do I do? We are up in the mountains 2 hrs away from a vet during a statewide shut down... and tomorrow is Sunday - but I do have an employee headed into Boise tomorrow morning for an appt - should she take the chick with her and try to find a vet? Is it unnecessary stress, isolation, and travel to ride around in a car all day? Should I wait a bit longer and be prepared to take her into town later when I know I can get an appt with a vet? Call the hatchery I got her from?
The chick is doing well - eating, drinking, and sleeping... can these sort of things clear on their own or do they require surgical removal? or is this little gal likely a gonner? :-( Would appreciate any experience. See photos for info.
Thank You!
