I came out this morning to check on my broody australorp and saw a brood of chicks hatched underneath. I examined each chick for problems and found that one had more of a nose than a beak! It's able to eat and drink. Will it make it or put it down?

Can I see a picture? It sounds like a deformity. She could live with it, depending on its severity.

Congrats on the chicks hatching!

Eating and drinking are key. If it is with a broody I would let the broody handle it. If it's suffering put it down, but if it is eating and drinking let it go. Don't breed it of course.

Wow, that is really weird. Its cute!

I agree though, even if it survives, make sure you don't breed it. You don't want to produce a strain of chickens that can't live a normal life.

Best of luck!

Ya, I know, but it is part of chicken farming I guess! His tongue also sticks out when he drinks! He doesn't peck his food, he munches it! I don't know how preening or foraging is going to be with out the fine point. The poor old hen was freaked out when she saw this misfit come out from beneath her! Well, hope it makes it!
