I have 6,, 4 week old chicks that I want to put outside, due to smell etc;. mess. This is my plan, abd would like comments and remarks please. I plan on putting them in a dog crate that has a tray on the bottom, lining the tray with newspapers, then wood shavings and straw, and chicken wire around the dog crate, since the wire on the crate is larger, but has wire all around it. then place the dog crate, in the hen house with the other hens. They will be separated from the other hens, while they are getting used hose hens get used to the new hens. Hen house is vocered and some insulation. starting to get warm out, Is the housing idea good and is it too early and warm enough.

It sounds fine to me, but you will need a heat lamp still. Especially at night.

I do the same thing, except during the day, I set the crate outside and take the pan out so they can dig in the dirt. They love it! Just make sure they sit in a sunny spot so they're warm enough.

Ours are between 3- 4 1/2 weeks old and I'm getting ready to do the exact same thing with a heat lamp, dog crate and all.

my 5 week old have been outside in a 36"x 30" insulated box with a heat lamp and its only in the 40's and dips to low 30's at night. Last night I bet was mid 20's

we have the same set up, but our little ones are a bit older so there was no need for extra wire. I hope this helps integrate them into the flock better, since the girls are used to seeing them and hearing them. good luck! it's a great idea
