Oh hi!
400

They love the selfie feature on my iPhone!

Has anybody else experienced this before? When my chicks are young they're all lovey dovey with me. They follow me, talk to me and usually beg when they want food. When the chicks grow up, they tend to ignore me, but they'll come to me when I have treats but they don't want to be loved on anymore. It makes me sad in a way. Why do they do that?
Imagine they were human children. When they're little, they want love, affection, protection, etc. As they grow, they become more independent. When they're teenagers, they may ignore you altogether, and when they're adults, they're adults. They're doing their thing and aren't interested in being babied anymore.

You will have exceptions to the rule, of course--I have had plenty of chickens who were cuddly as adults, but they are the exception, not the rule.

That makes a lot of sense.

Chicken math has got me now. Here's what I received Monday. I think I have identified most, but I may need some help from those of you out there with a better eye for breeds than I have.

Sicilian Buttercup

Columbian Wyandotte #1 (yep, she's the "loud one")

Black Cochin #1

Black Cochin #2 (loves to stay in my hand)

OK, the next 8 chicks contain: 1 black Minorca, 3 black Cuckoo Marans, 1 blue Andalusian, 2 Australorps, and a free mystery chick. Any help would be appreciated.

Someone posted this on FB and I thought of you...hope the link works

Chickies are getting big! The EEs are almost fully feathered now. The other guys have been just about fully feathered for about a week now, minus a few tufts here and there.

Here's some mug shots of the EEs haha. I can match them up with full body pics if ya'll want ;)

I'm guessing that is to have a positive influence on their eventual disposition? I'm intrigued by the suggestion. What effect is that supposed to have on them? Has anyone else heard of/tried this?

I am guessing the same thing. I didn't have time or think, to ask why so don't really know, just figured I'd try it. I guess it's to imprint on them something that at this certain age, will keep them from being human aggressive???? or help them???? LOL I am trying it though and will post if I have a chance to ask, or find out, with these chicks, anything. How I would know, I have no idea though??? LOL

I agree it is interesting and they work with a few standard breeds, not just the American Dominique's, and have for quite some time, so know what they are talking about. Not their first time around the block

I'm LOVING this breed. They are growing amazing, and feathering in so well, and are very quiet for chicks. Very friendly and curious too. Almost there with the cockerels and can't wait!!! These are VERY smart birds also. Very impressed with the breeding. They come from a BYC breeder, vnsseed. Highly recommend them if anyone is looking for some magnificent birds. I know they have standard/heritage Dorking's also, not sure what else. If you check their website, they also have a FB page posted on there.

Oh, the only thing you have to watch out for is they can actually fly. Especially as chicks, really really well...so need a top on the brooder. I have a Bengal kittie, so have hardwear cloth on both brooders
