I wish I could have saved them all. Annie has been a dear sweet thing to raise.
I have a problem with mother hens sitting so long on the nest prior to hatch that once the babies hatch they are way too anxious to exit the nest. The babies just arent ready for such an adventure. The reason for the long delay on the nest for the broodies is often their first eggs are not hatching but the mother continues to sit so I give her more eggs. I want her to have babies because she needs that reward. This causes her to have to sit sometimes for two or more months prior to hatching.
It is so sad when the babies follow the hens out of the nest before they are ready and are killed or are left behind for so long that they get cold and die. I tried to check the coop a few times a day to see how the mother is caring for or not their chicks. If Im away I might not be able to do so. I have lost count on how many babies I have brought back from the dead after they went into a freeze comma. Most still have not survived unless I keep and take care of them. Giving them back to the mother is often futile.
