I got a few baby chicks on the 25th. Earlier than I was anticipating, but I already had everything set up for the chicks I'd planned to get in May so I figured why not.

They were from my local feed store, who gets them from Ideal. I tried to pick ones that looked active and healthy (bright eyes, clean butts). I ended up losing one within the first 24 hours, which was hard but I figured was par the course for chicks.

Now I've got another one going down hill fast. This chick seemed totally normal this morning, eating, drinking, running around. Just now I checked on them, a few hours later, and this little one was just sitting under the brooder with its wings slightly extended. I tried to nudge them forward and they are able to walk, but are very weak and fall over after a few moments. Here's a video:

They are still trying to eat and drink, but the other chicks are picking on it (you can sort of see that in the vid).

Just for background: Chicks originated from Ideal, vaccinated for mareks (which we have within our adult flock). The brooder is in an area where my current birds have never been and I've been very careful to only interact with the chicks after a thorough scrub down.

I'm using an EcoGlow brooder plate. When the first chick died, I did a 3 day course of Corid just in case (the chick that passed had very loose, orange stools). Today was their first day without corid. This is the food they are on (ground up with a coffee grinder to make it nice and small). Again, as of this morning they were all eating, drinking, and pooping normally. The other two chicks are behaving normally.

Please help.

Hey hsve u tried vitamins or sugar in water to give them a boost? The brooder plate working okay not to hot not to cold? U got them on chick crumb? Sorry for all questions xx
Haven't tried sugar water yet, but I had some "intensive care" veterinary powdered food left over from when I had a different sick chicken. I called and asked the vet and they didn't see any reason it wouldn't be ok for a chick, so I've offered them some. Here's the info on it:

Chick ate a little bit of it on their own. I have them separated right now because the other chicks were picking and trampling. In a towel, keeping close to my body to stay warm while I look for another solution.

Brooder plate seems to be working ok, nice and warm to the touch but not hot. I don't have a surface thermometer to check but the other seems to be doing ok with it.

And yes, food is a starter/grower chick pellet (I pulverized it in a coffee grinder to get the bits even smaller).

Ok I'm shocked. I made up some sugar water and that really does seem to have pirked the chick up. They're still wobbly on their feet, but I put them in a box with some of the normal crumble and its eating like a champ.

I set them down with the other two chicks and now its scratching around and eating with them.

I'm still worried it might be too weak and get bullied/trampled. Should I remove them overnight?

Also, what on earth could have caused this one chick to crash so quickly? To be safe I've raised the brooder plate a little. Enough that the very back should but just barely touchable by their backs (the front is about 1/2 inch taller than them).

Even if I don't leave them in, would it be a good idea to change out the regular water for the other chicks to include the sugar water? Is that overkill if the others are acting normal?

Nah just put sugar water in all there water not gona hurt them if u want glad its helped should only be for a few hours to a day at a time.then go back to normal water assess situation if gets weaker again start sugar water or honey in water....maybe buy some vitamin supplements not sure what could caused it to be honest ? If anymore symptoms or issues just post not a expert but i do okay lol xxx
