So I decided to let my frizzle hatch an egg. It was my 1st time doing this. Out of 3 eggs, 1 was a dud, 1 mysteriously disappeared and the last one she hatched. She hatched 1 beautiful baby and everything seemed to be going great! After about 1 week, momma started to take baby out. The other bigger hens messed with the baby a little bit but momma protected her. Then a day later, I came out and saw the momma and baby under the coop. When I saw the baby, It was obvious that the other hens or roo started to peck it and now I can see her spinal column. I have since separated the mom and her chick and put some antibacterial spray on her wound. I didn’t want to wrap stuff around her neck especially since she is only a little over a week old now. Was worried momma wouldn’t take care of her after I sprayed her but she seems to accept her ok. Baby is still active, eating, and drinking. It has been 2 days since this has happened. My questions are this: 1) why did the other chickens attack the baby? They have been together in the same coop ever since she was hatched. 2) I am worried about infection but don’t want to keep picking baby up and upset her and mom. I have been putting electrolytes in their water and keeping them contained. And keepin and eye on the wound. Is there anything else that I should be doing?

Sometimes they can attack aggressively if it just isn't their chick or it doesn't smell right, and then it's just another intruder. It's suggested to put the hen and her babies in a separate pen until they're a certain age. I think you're doing a good job, I hope she heals well!

How is baby and momma doing today OP?:)

So far baby and momma are doing great! Very blessed! I really thought baby might not make it so to seeing her spinal column. So far no sign of infection and baby is chirping, eating, and drinking!! Of course, momma keeps dumping the food to teach baby how to scrounge and forage!! Arrgghh!!
