Baby chick with black toe

Hi,

I recently got a chick (a few days ago) who has this exact same thing happening to it. I was wondering, how did the chick do? Did it grow up without a toe?

The OP is not active on here anymore, but yes, when this happens, the chickens lose their toe but otherwise have a healthy and happy life, and can live to a ripe old age. A similar thing happens when chickens lose their toes, or feet to frostbite. Just leave the toe alone, and it will eventually fall off, and the chick will be fine.

Note - make sure that if you can see a hair or a leg band on the chick's leg you remove it once it starts to get tight. Elastic legbands are bad about not being removed, and then they can cut off circulation as the chick grows and chicks can lose a foot. They will still live a long healthy life, but have more trouble getting around. There are actually prosthetics people make for chickens that lose their feet to frostbite.

Welcome to BYC! Enjoy your new chick!
