My 2.5 week old baby Austra White has a crooked neck that is likely wry neck. I noticed it when she was a couple days old, but it wasn't that bad at first. She seems to be doing alright though (eating, drinking, playing, etc.) If it is a vitamin E deficiency I'm thinking I could give her raw sunflower seeds but my questions are:

How many sunflower seeds should I give her each day? I don't want to over do it.

Any other foods really high in vitamins that help wry neck?

Could it be a different issue - not wry neck?

Any help is appreciated! :)

Wry neck is usually caused by a vitamin deficiency, but it isn't always just vitamin E that is lacking. Supposedly young chicks that get wry neck have it because the egg they hatched from was lacking in nutrients. For the best chance at recovery it should be treated when you first see it. I think treatment should be more rigorous than just feeding food with high levels of vitamin E.

When one of my hatchery chicks had wry neck I use liquid vitamin B complex and vitamin E capsules. Mixed it up with some water and fed with a dropper. Also had Vital Pack vitamins and minerals in their drinking water. Took about a week before everything was mostly back to normal. My little black Jersey giant chick is now a pullet nearing laying age, indistinguishable from the other 2.

Thank you! What brand of liquid vitamin B do you recommend? I asked about the sunflower seeds because I have some already so it would be easier than buying something, but if the food isn't enough that's fine.

There is a small amount of E and thiamine (B1) in the Durvet vitamins. But I would go to a Walmart or Walgreens pharmacy, and get human B complex tablets and 400 IU of vitamin E softgels. Give 1/4 tablet of crushed B complex and empty a softgel of E, and give it to her in a little food or water daily. Do this, and help the chick to eat and drink enough for the next couple of weeks. Wry neck be from thiamine or E deficiency, head injuries, and in older birds, can be a sign of certain diseases.

Thank you, I'll look for those!

2 questions:

1. Can I only do vitamin E, then see if she gets better without the vitamin B? Or do I need both...

2. Is this the right one?
