Baby chick with Sour crop?

She is also pooing, only small amounts however mainly because we are starving her from solid food.
The crop is more like gushy, can't really feel anything solid in there, I fear that there may be something blocking her crop in some way?
Unfortunately she had been crafty and found some crumbs scattered around, also found some on the others chicks feet and ate it. As a result she worsened and starting choking again and going very lethargic. My dad then gently made her vomit, making her crop half the size and she brought up all the food she has eaten today. After around 10 minutes she was back to acting normal. We then gave her a small amount of oil and massaged her crop downwards, nothing really noticeable happened, but hope it helped. She is now in a nice new clean brooder with no food and fresh water. We then waited and made sure she was pooing where she did a very small but normal looking one, before putting her friends back in with her, they are all now scratching and exploring the new surroundings, her crop and herself appears stable so long as she seems not to eat, then she goes downhill.
Thanks Amber!

I thought I would post to say that my little girl passed away just now, I found her choking on some brown gritty stuff, my Dad quickly came over and tried to get it out, she then brought up a big black object, I believe it was bark, and all her crop contents came up and then she just went limb. Poor little girl :'(

Thanks everyone for your posts

I am sorry for your loss! :( I am sure she'll be in Heaven in the house that God is preparing for you! At least now you'll be in peace and she without pain. Hope something happens to bring a lot of happiness to you!! Best wishes!! XOXO

My question is how do you get a chic to even open it's beak yet hold it open!! Mine won't! Has mushy crop for 3 days now.

@Scorwin: You can hold the bird immobile between your legs (lap) facing you. Now you'll be able to use the squirt bottle on her. Use a little force, as it is the matter of life and death!! Hopefully your chick pulls through!!! Good luck!!

Thanks everyone :)
I'm just glad she isn't in pain anymore, Poor girl.

And @Scorwin, You may need to someone to hold the chick while you use your finger to pry the mouth open, also in darker rooms they will struggle less. I also find squeezing lightly at the end of their beak causes them to open their beak to try and shake you off. Hope your chick is doing okay!

Trish,

I too had a week old chick not eating and seemed to had a blockage. Thanks for indicaating the amount of vinigar. I have offered yogart, just bought grit and antibiotic and all are on save-a chick. I also ground up the chick starter and massaged the crop. It is still eating and drinking but is smuch smaller than the others and less active.

Hope this works. Thanks eveyone. These are my first chicks ever and I have 20. Only one with problems so far.

I have a 3 week old chick who has a large golf ball sized lump on her right hand side breast. I'm thinking sour crop , then worried it might have been impacted crop.
She is so little and I'm worried I might hurt her. I'm also worried that it perhaps isn't a crop issue and just how they are when they don't have feathers yet.
Should I treat her as if it is sour crop or impacted crop ? Or should I just monitor her ? The lump was solid/hard yesterday, this morning gone, this evening was back but smaller and was mushy.
Any help is greatly appreciated

After reading all of the forums it sounds like the chick is okay as long as their crop is empty in the morning. I have 3 week old chicks and one has a very full crop. I am going to monitor her. This is my second set of chicks that I've raised. The first set seemed much healthier. I used medicated crumbles from manna pro last time and didnt want to give them medicated feed this time so I got some organic non-medicated starter crumbles from manna pro and they seem much more fibrous like they'd be harder to digest. I bought some of those chick puffs supplement and chick grit and a few books on how to raise healthy chicks and chickens. I'll let you know what happens next.
