Doesn't the sod have grit in it? Or should I buy some commercial grit? I assumed the sod would contain enough grit for them.
What are the chicks bedded on? Fine pine shavings or large flakes? If fine, remove it and get some large flakes. I have seen chicks eat the fine stuff and they can impact their crops with that stuff or even hay. Never put a chick or growing bird on hay. Never. Never give them long grass clippings either. That will lead to an impacted crop. Remove the sod. No need for that now, they may even pic up a parasite.. Get some "chick" grit. It is specially sized for chicks. When they get about 14 wks you can give them adult sized grit. Just sprinkle a little bit every few days around in their brooder. A little pile here or there. They will dive into it and clean it out. That's what they always seem to do, so I never give too much of it. Usually chicks don't need grit if just on chick food, but, if they are eating shavings, or getting treats, they will need it.
Gently massage that little chicks crop a few times a day and see if you can help it pass whats in it. It may just be a pile of dirt in there and it should pass in a day or two. If you notice chicks with crops that never seem to go down or get larger, and the bird is getting emaciated, it is likely crop bound and will need help. Crop bound and gizzard bound is hard to resolve, so best to avoid what causes it. Too few feeders and inappropriate bedding are the main causes.
