Baby chicks afraid of the dark!?

First time chicken owner. My two RIRs have been raised indoors with increasing outside playtime when its warm. They now seem to be terrified of the dark. I decided its time to leave the heat lamp off and as soon as it was dark they were crying and trying to get out of their box. I opened the door and and they ran out and jumped on my lap. Anyone experienced this? Is there such thing as weaning them off the light? It's warm here in the laundry room. 75 or more degrees and they don't want under the heat of the lamp. They sleep on the other side of their box. They just are looking for the light. Caught me by surprise.

it is a fairly normal response. chickens follow light. if you put even a dim light in the coop they will almost always go in.
