So just a final question.... You use 1/4 cup of several different types in one mason jar? So you might have 3/4 cup worth of dry seed when you start? I bet if on day 4 you put in the sun they would green up really nicely.

When my broody hen raised her little brood she was finding and feeding them bugs before the end of the first week. I have seen one eat a whole cricket. I got her some meal worms and instead of eating them she fed them to her chicks. So I think what ever they think they can eat and do should be okay. My people raised chicks like yogurt, applesauce (home made no sugar) Spaghetti, and what ever bugs I can find for them, small grass hoppers, maggots, a little mash mixed with ACV, oatmeal.

They love it!

from all the hours of research i have done, fb, utube, google, byc, etc. all have said to keep out of the sun or any direct light. has to do with killing the nutrients or something and it dries them not greens them. sprouts like moisture sun dries them. too much moisture and they mold.
