Baby chicks for our first time! Is that constant cheep a worry?

If they peep for mama sometimes, you can hang a feather duster in there. They'll snuggle up under it.:)

Yeah, I've seen pictures of that, and it's adorable. But we're not using the hanging red light - we're using a Brinsea Ecoglow brooder plate, so we want them to go snuggle up under there when they're cold. I wouldn't want them trying to keep warm enough under the feather duster.

Very cute! Terri looks to have feathered legs--maybe she's a cochin! :love
Good luck with your Dinos! :D

Okay, I just went and looked up cochins and looked at a picture of a chick ....

Yeah. That looks a lot like Terri. DAMN. If they gave me a low productivity bird, instead of the Ideal 236 that's supposed to be one of the highest productivity - that is not good.

Not sure what to do now.

You're braver than I am, lol. I haven't let my cats into the room with the chicks, thought they've certainly tried. The cats think this arrangement is totally unfair, btw, as they were raised in that room as babies (my studio doubles as my nursery) and consider it their own personal playground. I just know that if I let them see what is in there, I'll never get the little predators back out again. (The chicks are safe in their brooder, even if one of the cats slips past me.)

Maybe when the girls get a bit bigger, I'll let the kitties have a peek before I take the chickens out to their coop. :D
Our cat George is afraid of my full grown chickens, and when I showed him my new chicks -plus two ducks and a Naked neck (which is also a chicken breed)- he sniffed interestedly then started back looking disturbed. I could just tell he was thinking "Oh no, not more of them!" The funny thing is that even though they're similar size, he's still bigger than them. With my first batch our old cat James would try to sit in the brooder with them to share the heat lamp. XD

Well. Cochins are super sweet at least :love Sorry about that,

Cochins are low productivity, but they are very sweet and adorable birds.

When you are limited to 3 birds only and want eggs it doesn't really matter how sweet they are though. :(

I probably will. I already sent an email to Ideal Poultry, asking if Ideal 236 have feathered legs, and if not, did they deliver any cochin or bantam cochins to this particular store this week.

I am hoping they are more organized than the feed store.
