baby chicks from mc murray

I have used the pine pellet bedding. Thank goodness for this site! I Have gained most of my chicken knowledge here. Sorry for your loss. Wishing all of the rest of your chicks well:)

For the first week or so try just plain paper towels in the bottom of your brooder, then switch to pine shavings. Sold most likely where you got your chick starter. Usually in a "bale" for about $5 or so. Good luck. Keep reading EVERYTHING on BYC. Loads of great info here - and help too!

Goodness! So glad you got that Cedar out!! Yes, pine shavings. Cedar can lead to the chicks death. Pretty babies you have there, hope you don't lose anymore either, that's so devestating!

I know everyone says cedar is bad and I dont doubt some is, but I have used it and never had any problems. It smells better and keeps the mites off.( i just got mine from Walmart, fresh is pry the bad stuff) Now I will say this I has a larger area so maybe it vents better? I do tend to use pine more often just cause everyone saying its bad for them . ( of course i dont want my babies to die) and Straw is just like an awesome living place for mites. Never used the corn cob.

everyone tends to lose a few chicks from hatcheries. We just lost 3 out of 25.

i am going to pick up pine. but also i am about to be doing a ton of surfacing on many diff types of woods. can i take the shavings from that and put it in my coop ?
