Hi everyone i finally got four babies! One is a buff orpington and a blue andalusion I got them on Wednesday the 31st. The Blue was chirping SO Loud on the ride home which was an hour! I got her home and checked them over and noticed that the blue had pasty butt so i did what i was taught by your all and i soaked her bum and gently wiped and she had such a hard ball stuck to her bottom that it took me quite awhile to get it dislodged. That night she barely ate and drank. I gave her water by using a dropper and she did drink some. That first night she was very lethargic and i figured she was tired after the drive, the soaking and all the chirping..I slept on my couch and had them next to me in their brooder! She is eating and drinking on her own but now Her poop always seems to have mucus in it and whenever she poops l have to soak and clean her bottom because it all sticks to her. She is just not as active as my Buff and does not eat and drink as much. I just got my two barred rocks literally and hour ago and put them in a separate brooder because i was wondering if whats going on with my blue is possibly an illness and also if there is anything i can do for her. Her bottom is not irritated thankfully! Should i keep them separated? They are in pine shavings now but initially i had them in Terramigo, i switched because i think little pieces of pellets were sticking to my blues bottom and frankly i just didn't like it. The place i got my Buff and Blue sold it to us and said it was the best for them..Maybe when they are bigger but not now. Thank you for any and all help!! You are all a gold to me.
Sorry for my terrible writing skills i suck at it...
Thanks,
Shannon

There's a possibility that when the Blue had the severe case of pasty butt, it blocked poop farther back up the intestine, and that blockage still may exist even though it appears she's pooping.

Take some coconut oil in the solid form and break off tiny bits. Assemble about a teaspoon of this substance. Then slip one bit of solid oil at a time into the right side of the chick's beak until you get all of the teaspoon-full down her.

Very gently massage her crop to dissolve the oil and to encourage it to empty out of the crop. If you do this this evening, by morning, if constipation is the problem, you should see a huge turd from this chick, and you should see a transformed chick, a lot perkier. In the event you do not find the chick has pooped out a blockage and is still lethargic, try putting slight pressure in the upper left half of the vent, "milking" it. If the blockage is down in the lower intestine, this should help the chick to expel it.

It does no harm to treat for constipation even if that turns out not to be the issue. Not to treat constipation can result in death.

Thank you both! I will go see if i can find some coconut now and we did give electrolytes. Should i give the chicks scrambled eggs? I have read this is good for them too?Thank you bunches!!! I appreciate it greatly!

Finely minced hard boiled egg is great for new baby chicks. However, hold off on feeding any to this particular chick until you are sure it's not constipated, although it can still have water. Then give it some minced egg and plenty of fresh water with electrolytes.

Thank you I will try to find someone who sells eggs that are not from the grocery store then make them some. :thumbsup
