:weeIn the haste of (or lack of) chicken math I have just purchased a Golden Laced Cohrin chick:love:celebrate about 3 days old. Im guessing it's a girl.... Anyone have suggestions on how to raise Cohrins? What's to like and what not? Why do you like them? I'm looking for any and all ideas on Cohrin!

Hi there, hope you are enjoying BYC! :frow

Unless your chick came sexed as a pullet... there is 50% chance it will be a cockerel. And do you mean Cochin, as in cute little feather legged chick? A gold laced Cochin would be awfully pretty when it's mature feather pattern comes in!

Did you get more than 1? They like and need friends as they are social creatures.

Do you have other chickens or have you raised chicks before? Using a formulated chick starter feed is important as well as providing warmth and fresh (poo free) water.

Pics always welcome, and even encouraged! ;) :pop

Yes I do mean Cochin but the phone auto corrects it for some reason...:idunnoBut anyway. I have looked on how to sex them (I did buy strait run) and it seems it is a girl. I bought a few Silkie chicks and a Ayam-cemani/Silkie chick mixed to kept it company. I currently have THE MOST SPOILED Orpington chickens in the world.:p So yes I have raised chickens before.:) Thanks 4 response:)

It's it standard size? I love my bantam Cochins more than any other breed. They are so quiet and friendly and soft. I don't know if standard Cochins are as docile, but they are all pretty.

:loveCochins are awesome, and absurdly simple for a backyard enthusiast to care for!! Gotta love them!! Don’t expect enormous numbers of eggs, handle often, cuddle that fluffy softness, try and keep their feet clean (those little street sweepers are dirt and poop magnets), and check for parasites OFTEN, especially around the vent. Ratty or dirty feathers likely means lice or mites, which should be dealt with IMMEDIATELY (Cochins suffer terribly when infested). Don’t hesitate to bathe when necessary, and watch for poop collecting beneath the vent, it is often a sign of an infection. Low roosts are best, Cochins are not athletic flyers and struggle to reach high roosts. Single combs are susceptible to frostbite, a little canola oil on the comb and wattles can help prevent this. Enjoy your new baby fluff ball!:love
