This is my typical set up. Having the waterer on something that will catch the water will reduce how wet everything gets. I have towels below, but I have really stated to like using washable puppy pads. Straw works well, but gets really stinky when it gets wet. I dont use straw anymore because it stinks too much. Shavings stink less and tend to stay drier, but you do have to be careful about shavings. The quality of shavings has gotten worse. Now I use those washable puppy pads. I have an injured duck that has been indoors long term for right now. And I am surprised how little it smells with puppy pads compared the shavings. I honestly thought it would be worse.

I switch waters as my ducklings get bigger. This one below is a deli meat container with the holes cut out the top.

This is the last one I use for my ducklings when they get big enough. Once they can tip over the one from the above picture, it is usually a sign to switch.

Boy, did I underestimate it my first go. I kept them in the same sized space I did my chicks but they outgrew it in less then a week. As long as you know how to prevent the water mess it's pretty easy.

I can imagine. No way I'm using that stuff.

I use the vinyl textured shelf liner cut to fit and then pine shavings. The shelf liner is non-slip and can be washed.

I also have a piece that I put out on my desk when the little fluffies are out having playtime: it works well. I put newspaper underneath it on my desk.
