I really don't think I could do the break its neck thing. I am terrified I wouldn't be quick enough or do it right and would cause it more pain. I have known people who broke their neck and LIVED!!! What if it did??? I just don't know how well enough to feel confident doing it that way.

Thank you and I am so sorry you had to lose your mother so young. Even when things like this come up I am so thankful she has such a huge love for all life. I see so much cruelty in the world and I am thankful I was raised with compassion for all living creatures.

If you don't feel confident in doing it, I wouldn't do it in case it goes wrong. So so sorry to hear this, I will be thinking about you. Do you think it is near dying on its own?

Today I watched a pbs movie in which there was a lady who had a silkie chicken she considered her "soulmate". She took it swimming, to the store, you get the idea. It is very disturbing when I see people "humanize" animals. It seems abnormal to equate humans with animals. Now I realize that there are those who do not believe in God or think the Bible is a not true. This is not meant for you. Those who do should consider that God said "have dominion over the firsh of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth". He said this to man. Genesis 1:28 (see 1:26)
This word "dominion" means responsibility in the hebrew. Of course I can't explain it in depth here.
But my point is this Dominion over man is God's. Dominion over the animals is man's. So to compare euthanizing animals to euthanizing men is wrong.
I do not beleive God gave man dominion over himself, but euthanizing this bird would be the responsible thing. If you disagree I am sorry you are offended.

I am a humane society volunteer and member. Having seen the pain that many pets/animals live through, when they are terminally/painfully sick, just to make their owners feel better about not taking their life, is just selfish on the owner part. Sorry to be so blunt, I struggle with every pet (mine or dumped) that needs to be euthanized. believe me I cry from the minute I make the decision, to the last shovel of dirt on their grave.

I had to cull a chick the other day for the first time... typically this is hubbies job to take care of the injured animals... but he was at work and I didn't want him to suffer anymore... I wanted the quickest way plus full proof (I didn't want to botch it up like snap his neck and he live) so... here is what I did...

warning story below is a tad graphic but I wanted to give good instructions of my method...

I was shaking and terrified I had never killed an animal... But I took my sharpest pair of garden pruners and put the sharp side under his chin with the blunt end to his neck this way it cut his throat to bleed him out but the blunt end instantly snapped his neck... it was hard watching the twitching once I did the deed but I had to keep telling my self he was dead and it was just reflexes... only took a couple of seconds for him to go limp but he died instantly... This was the quickest way I could think of... I know my hubby used my garden pruners to cull some baby bunnies that the mommy bunny had tried to eat... poor things were tore up bad and this was really quick for them too...

It's not the cleanest method but it is quick and culls two ways so it's hard to mess up as long as you squeeze quick on the handle and twist back to snap the neck as it cuts and I just held them in the left hand to keep them steady and calm...

It was really hard on me at first but I felt better about my self after it was done and I was able to give that poor chick some peace and end it's pain...

Sorry about the chick. Just do it quick with a sharp pair of shears or a sharp knife.

Please do not freeze or use CO2.

In the freezer, just because you can't see it die, does not stop the fact that the body goes into hypothermia and shock before shutting down.

With CO2, the same deal. CO, as in carbon monoxide will make them fall asleep, but NOT CO2, that would be suffocation similar to breathing with your head in a bag.

Oh...I would NEVER freeze her.

Since I have permission to do this now I don't have to worry about her head missing. I have some VERY sharp knives. We will see what I think after I pick her up tomorrow.
