Hello. We have picked up our first set of chicks just yesterday. We have never had chickens before. One of the chicks, a New Hampshire Red who is (at best guess 1 week old) we can’t see one eye and the other is squinty/goopy. Any recommendations on what we should do? She was the only New Hampshire Red left where we purchased, the remaining chicks are all Amberlinks. She appears to be eating ok, I have not seen her drink, but I am not watching at all times. She is very vocal and moves around.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Welcome To BYC!

How is your chick doing?

If her eyes are goopy, try cleaning/flushing them with saline to remove the debris and open them up.

You can make your own saline for eyes if you wish - there's many recipes online. You would add salt to boiling water. Let it cool, then use to clean the eyes. I suggest that you make fresh as needed. "Sterile" solutions need to be stored in sterilized jars for no more than 24hrs.

Do what you can to get her drinking - see if she will drink from a small cup held up to her beak. Hydration is important. Once she's drinking, then offer her some wet food.

I do hope the eyes are goopy because she was pecked or similar instead of this being respiratory illness.
Keep us posted.

Thank you. We have been cleaning her eyes twice a day and overall they are looking Much better. None of the other chicks seem to be having any issue, so I’m hoping it stayed with her only.
I appreciate your response!

That’s good that’s it’s looking better! I am sorry that you only had one response. Do you have a recent picture of this chick?
