Baby Parakeets: Advice Needed

They really are! He is really big. Wait to they get out and they become very curious about their surroundings. For my parakeets I got wood and made nestboxes, though I like the idea of the cardboard.
I may make a wood one if Amiga lays eggs again. Then, I could make it with a lid so I can clean it easier. This box has worked well, though!
I just made the hole in the nestbox slightly bigger because the little one was trying to get out last night but he couldn't fit through the hole!

Thats adorable! Its good that they are curious about the outside world and are ready to come out. I have a nest box that is wood and the side is a glass so that you can see everything into it. The problem with wood is that they eat it so if you do get one you have to make sure they don't do any holes, though it takes them a really long time to do that sort of damage. Good luck with the chicks. You must be very proud of them!

Yup, every time someone comes over I show them! The babies still aren't out, but they look out the hole all the time! Any day now ...
Thanks for the info on wood nestboxes! It must be very cool to see inside yours with the glass!

I love the nest box with the glass. Unfortunately after a few years they ate the part that holds the glass so the glass fell. When something like that happens I usually get a new one but I haven't found that one with the glass. I love it when they start taking their heads out. They look so adorable. One of these day they would get out. When they start getting out you'll see that they will come out for a few minutes and go back inside. It would be like this for a few days until they get used to the outside. After that they would spend more and more time and eventually the parents won't allow them back into the nest. Don't worry about the weaning because the dad is he one that teaches them to eat. It usually takes 1-2 weeks for them to fully leave the nest. Have fun with them.:D

Thanks, they are alot of fun! You were right: the older one is coming out sometimes now, but only for a few minutes. He's as big as his mom now!

Hi I'm sorry but I have been trying to find a parakeet forum and all the ones I can find have not had posts in years so if you guys don't mind I have a question. Is it a good idea to get a parakeet at a pet store I am looking to get one and I went to the pet store last weekend to get an idea of the birds they had there they had a few finches in one cage a green cheeked conure in another and then like 13 parakeets in another cage the birds looked physically healthy bright eyes non aggressive no patches of feathers missing but I've heard that birds from stores aren't a great idea as they are usually more skittish towards humans. What are your experiences with store birds? Any advise is appreciated.

I personally have never had problems with store bought Budgies, but that was many years ago. I would highly recommend trying to find s good breeder, if you can, though. Check Facebook, and, maybe Crag's List. Also, check out local newspaper ads. Only fall back on store bought if you have to. Good luck, and enjoy..I love Budgies!

Thanks I did want to buy from a breeder and looked all around my area to no avail so I think I will have to fall back on the store but the green cheeked conure they had did seem healthy he was climbing all ll over his cage and making little chirp sounds so that's a good sign and to be honest I'd get the conure I'd they weren't so expensive.

Store bought birds are ok as long as the store is reputable. You may have to take some extra time taming them, though. :)
