Hello to all!
I got 9 baby peacocks a few weeks ago from a neighbor that incubate eggs and sold them to me, the next day i got up and one was dead, since then 4 more has died, a few days ago i notice discharge in the eyes so i started putting terramycin and this seem to got them better, however some of them are making strange noises and breathing with the mouth open, I saw one died yesterday and seem he was not able to get oxygen to his body.

I have a cat rescue and some of them have the herpes virus that is a upper respiratory disease in cats, the cats have never been close to baby peacocks and not sure if it can be transmitted between species, but it seem that this is the same thing they have.

I read on the forums two antibiotics to give them and got them at tractor supply yesterday, I do not want to give them any injections, can i give it to them orally? and if so what dosage is recommended? they are about 1 month old or so very small.

I feed them organic chick starter as well as fresh fruits and alfalfa sprouts 3 times per day, i add lemon juice to the water and a bit of spirulina and probiotics. they are in the garage with good heating system and they also have a lot of ventilation for fresh air to circulate, clean cage every day and not sure what else to do in order to keep them alive.

The injectable antibiotics i got are: tylan 200 and LA 200

please advice how can i heal the babies.

thanks

Welcome to BYC! I don't think that birds can get feline herpes, but they can get a whole bunch of avian specific respiratory infections. Do you have a scale? If not, you need to get one and weigh each bird in grams. Tylan 200 dose is 0.0275 ml per 100 grams orally twice a day. Do you have Baytril? Baytril might be a better choice.

awesome thanks a lot, I will get the scale, I been giving them the tylan 200 0.1ml once per day and so far no one have died since, one stop eating yesterday and we hand fed it gave him antibiotic and today he is up and eating on his own :)

Do try to get a weight on them and be sure to give the Tylan no less than twice a day. In birds Tylan is supposed to be given no less than twice a day.
