I have to use another device to post pictures so it takes a while... I wanted to know what would cause the circulation in the chicks' legs to stop? They don't have anything around their legs. But I'm at loss to figuring out what caused the swelling and purpleness.
I forgot who was limping. I picked one up your take these pictures. Looks fine, right? I put it back and choose another. This one was running around like crazy! I couldn't get a good pic, but apparently that one is fine and beyond! That one ran to mommy. I guess it wasn't too bad of a leg injury, whoever it was. I know for sure it wasn't the third baby.
People use a bandaid as a brace for their legs. Would this help her to walk and stand? Or does it just shape the legs properly? Like this: spraddle4.jpg (320×240) Also, since bandaids stick really good, how would I take it off of the poor little thing? I just don't want to treat her for the wrong thing, like if the legs are broken or have no circulation I'm putting braces to help her stand. ???
this is really interesting, I am new to keeping quail and have had a few with "funny" legs, my neice has also been hatching quail, and she has had 2 with splayed legs. at a day old and when problem were discovered we tried the band aid trick (worked well with my hen chicks and a turkey chick) but with the quail they just seemed to end up upside down and stuck on their back, and unable to move. I persevered with mine but sadly she was bullied to death, my sister and neice took the band aid of theirs. two if their quail then ended up with one leg sticking straight out the side at a 90deg angle. both these had to be put to sleep as their bodies became twisted to accommodate the hip problem. would this have been related to the splayed legs do you think? not sure if it was the same 2 quail as had probs when smaller. with my yellow courtnix quail born last night her legs are not exactly splayed, but she seems to be having trouble waling and her legs are further apart than the rest of them, I have tried a slightly different meathod. I have used a bit of drinking straw with a loom band looped through it over each leg. hoping this will stop her from tangling her feet up like seemed to happen with the band aid. i'll see how I get on.
again as i'm now to quail I don't know ift he same would apply, but recently I hatched out a turkey with legs pretty much like that. and was told it was due to having topush harder to get out of the egg after a few days her legs returned to normal and she can walk fine now. I have found with quail there seems to be even more need for a hospital box as they really so just run all over each other. worse than chooks or turks. i'm sorry to hear you wee one died, it is upsetting. I have lost a few myself, and while it's sadly part and parcel of it, it is still upsetting. I am posting this incase it might help with further hatchings or problems that may be had x
HELP!!! Urgent! Eggtopsies of the remaining eggs revealed a peeper in progress! The poor little one is alive, and there is a bit of blood... I've never hatched, so is there any chance of survival at all??? I will do everything to get this thing to live, including raising it until it can be with its siblings... and no I don't have the heart to toss it:-( please any suggestions?
I'd just try to create an environment similar to being below its mother, for now - warm and a little moist. And see what happens. How long has it been since the hen stopped incubating the egg? And how warm is it where they live? (just curious to know how hardy those eggs are)
Has the bleeding stopped? If not you could try applying pressure or put a little bit of cornstarch on it to clot the wound. Also how far out of the egg is he? Wait until all the blood vessels (and yolk) have been fully absorbed before helping him too much. Hope the little guy lives!
High eighties over here. I believe the chicks were born four days ago(when she decided only to care for them). I managed to slip the eggs into her spot a few times but she kept kicking them around. The chick's beak was in the peep hole, but it didn't make a sound. It probably wasn't supposed to live anyways T-T
