My sweet little baby has a poopy butt. I cleaned her last night and was extra careful. I cleaned her little backside with warm water and a cotton ball. I dried her with the low setting on the blow dryer. She really liked that.

I was concerned about the others pecking her, so I separated her. I put her in a little basket, covered it, put in water and food for her, and put her in the brooder so she would not be lonely. All the other chicks huddled up to where she was laying sleeping when I went to bed. Notice, I left about an inch open. When I got up this morning, she had escaped and was in with the others.

This morning her little vent is not covered but there is poop down lower. I put Vaseline on her. She came from a Frizzle/Silkie egg. She has feathers starting on her feet. I’m very new to this. I just started hatching eggs and have only had very slight pasty butt on one chick from Tractor Supply. I picked that chick because I was worried no one else would take her. She is doing great snd she’s beautiful.

What can I clean her with? She is five days old. I don’t want mess with it if it’s her umbilical cord. Thank you for any insight.

Just make sure the vent is clear. The down on the butt below the vent will soon fall and and be replaced with feathers. It doesn't need to be perfectly clean.

A chick that has repeated pasting may have internal issues. You might be able to ease the chick's pooping by giving it a little coconut oil. Smear a little on the vent while you're at it. Oil can be used to clean the vent, as well.

I add 1/2 cap full of apple cider vinegar to my chick's water (1 qt). I have yet to have a chick with poopy butt since starting that routine.

Thank you! I have coconut oil. She seems to be doing fine. Her little bottom is clean and she’s active.
