Back At The Chicken Shack

We are reviewing the breeds coming... latter this year.

Saipan
Marans
D’uccle
Lakeshore (Crested Cream Legbar cross ?)
Crested Legbars (Cream and White Sport)
Olive Egger (Welsummer X Crested Legbar)
Phoenix
Yokohama
Sumatra
Easter Egger/Amercaunas
Egyptian Fayoumi

We plan to add Silkies back into the flock. Brahmans, Jersey Giants and Naked Necks are also being considered.

We have a couple projects in mind both pure breeding and crossing with goals... plus we are trying out a few breeds we have not kept before. We also like a variety of different colored eggs, because it’s just cool.

1 Big Chicken Project and 1 Small Chicken Project of which we have a list of traits we want ultimately.

First two chick orders arrived...

My Pet Chicken order came all dead. They are resending chicks but naturally I am worried about the second batch (this is a very small order).

Cackle Hatchery order came all happy and healthy, but minus one of the breeds we really wanted. However what did arrive is doing great.

I will try to get pictures posted of the chicks.

The coop bird area rebuild is on hold till big giant tree cleared by tree company. Tree split and went down. Everyone seems to forget how old I am, and climbing trees, roping them off and working a huge chainsaw is just not an option... people really forget how banged up permanently my body is, that I am not young anymore, my body comes with it's own special sound effects when it moves. I have to wait for the yard to be cleaned up by paid professionals it is just too much tree, asses damage to fencing, then I can restart the rebuild project.

Current coop I had moved prior to the tree coming down to a temporary spot well shaded under our apple tree. Glad I did that... or the coop would now be crushed under a big Modesto Ash if I had decided to work around versus moving it completely to tear up area.

The third company chick order comes in August.

10 day old chicks, I will be either splitting them up into multiple brooders or setting up the big pen for them. Yokohama, Sumatra, Phoenix, and Olive Eggers

One of the Sumatra chicks… blue.

My Pet Chicken sent a replacement order, though this time the chicks arrived alive they failed to thrive. We could not get 5 of the 6 to eat or drink. Only one little Legbar left, it is the only one that was ever active. The Sumatra is from the Cackle order. All the Cackle chicks seem healthy so far.

Well I think I have a chick eating the blood feathers on their buddies… so I took out all the birds with the bald spots sprayed the Blue stuff on them, put those in a separate brooder, then added a few mates to split the chicks evenly. Tomorrow’s feed will be a mix of chick starter and adult feed to see if that helps. The chicks are old enough to be outside in their brooders, no heat lamp, so transitioning he feed should start. I will add vitamins to their water too. Probably toss in some chopped up seaweed and seeds too. Hopefully I can figure out which one is my feather eater.

Friends needed their young birds baby sat, so I have a bunch of teen Pullets and a goose over for a birdie sleep over… I am keeping their flock and mine separated of course. Bio Security it’s a thing.

Adventures in chicken keeping.

A few pictures of the newest chicks that arrived today… 3 did not make it, and I am concerned with another. I am pretty sure 2 chicks we lost were Marans, the third maybe an Egyptian Fayoum, the one I am worried about as well maybe an Egyptian FayoumI. The Naked Necks went straight for the food and water without coaxing or being shown.
