Back with a few more questions..

Of course it's not always successful .......dealing with any animals adopting others is a gamble.....some Hens will take Chicks 5 days later??
As a rule it is a two day window.....

Anyways......

Cheers!

She has been super broody and has proved so far to be a wonderful mama. I wld love for her to adopt more babies but I'd hate to risk rejection. It's so much easier for mom to raise the baby. Heat lamps and constant checks are exhausting.

Yep.....Hens are the best at raising Chicks.....

Cheers!

My roo met the baby for the first time and pecked it twice. For fear of the little one being harmed I closed the pen off and let mama and baby explore while the rest of the flock free ranged. Should I just try again in a controlled setting so I can get him away if he continues to be ugly? I don't want him to kill the baby.
How did hard did he peck it?
What did the chick do when it got pecked?
The chick should run away and the cock/erel shouldn't chase it down.
It looks 'mean', even if the pecked squawks like being murdered, it's probably fine
Pecking is how they communicate....sometimes you have to grit your teeth and let it happen.
As long as the cock/erel doesn't chase/pin it down and beat it, just leave them be.

The chick ran away squeeling and the roo kept after it til I broke him off. I gave him 2 chances and he did it twice. I knew some pecking was normal but I also know that a chick less than a week old can only take so much. As hard as the mom worked to have the baby I'd hate for my roo to kill it. I'm gonna wait til it's a little older and try again.

Yeah, my suggestion is keep it from all other big birds and let Mom be Mom......yikes!!!

Cheers!

That's my plan. I will let the big Kids free range and keep the pen closed if mom and baby want to have some room to explore. Safe and controlled. At least til lil peep is older. I'm so happy to have it. I sure don't want to risk losing it.

Easy for others to say what to do and it's not their babies getting attacked by other chickens.....Mom and baby are happy doing their own thing......yep.......My Hen is still in the garage being Mom... Happy hen with two chicks.......

Awesome and best of luck!!

Quote: Ah, well then, yeah, the chasing is not cool.
Wasn't sure if that was the case, so I asked to be sure.
I added some chicken behavior info because of your low post count I assumed you were probably new to chickens.
Hope I didn't offend you.
Sounds like you have a good sense and will be able to try again with observation.

Will now ask how old is the cock/erel.....and has he ever been around little bitties before??

Oh, and, BTW, Welcome to BYC!

Yes I'm still fairly new to raising chickens. I grew up with them and have always loved them. Started our first coop last spring. My roo is less than a year old. He's never been around bitties before. He's a buckeye and and excellent care taker to his hens. He protects them with all he has. Super friendly. This is also my first broody hen/hatching experience. I love it! My mama hen is a rir. I also have a golden comet hen and a heritage rir hen. They are all very friendly, they love treats! They have become a part of our family. I know it's all new for all of them and I'm hoping with patience they will accept little peep into the flock with welcome arms. Both other hens were nice to the baby. Just got to work on Bucky! And I'm not the least offended. I'm new to the site and I'm xtremely grateful for all the helpful info.

Quote: Cool.
Was mama setting on the eggs where the rest of the flock could see her for the 3 weeks?
Did the cockerel give the broody any grief/pecks along with the chick?
Did the broody do anything to protect the chick from the cockerel?

I'd keep mama and chick within sight of the flock and try to let them spend time together again in another day or so.
Eventually they will all work it out.
