I dunno. That documentary said one parent always stayed behind to watch the eggs. It was apparently common for the males to let the fire die down while the mother was gone, to cause female development, and in turn, less rival males.

y'know, people have been telling me to read that for years, and I LOVED the wiki link yousent. So I think I'm on it. You just tipped me,and I'll hit the library after work tomorrow. Or hit up my friend's Pratchett-mad household for extras. Tx for the suggestion.

Meanwhile, anyone want to start coming up with some coop plans? I might sic my kids on this.

Greetings All!

If you go the any of the Dragon-Magic sites on the internet, you usually find list of dragons, based on (skin)color. Depending upon your source, there are at least 5 and usually 8 or more.

Another good set of Dragon Books, are the Pern books by Anne McCaffery....now I wouldn't mind having one of Those Dragons in the least....

Dragons prefer caves rather than man-made habitations.... a Stone castle modified to fit can possibly be acceptable to youngling dragons.

My biggest worry however would be keeping it fed. Raw meat, and LOTS of it!!

Mama Dragon, you seem to know a lot. If I start a broody dragon at the beginning of September, when can I expect draclings?

First of all..... WHERE have you found a Broody Dragon???????

Second.... All the Pern Dragons lay their eggs in a clutch, like common reptiles, taking several days to do so. You must have Hot Sand for Mother and clutch. They have several months from laying until hatching, with the shells going from a soft leathery texture to rock-hard shells. Pern Dragon mothers cuddle their clutches, rather than "sitting" them. Queens are the only female who reproduces successfully, and She will often separate the single queen egg from the rest of the clutch for special care and handling.

If you are a friend to Dragonkind, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND the Dragonriders of Pern series of books.

I don't know anything about the Discworld Dragons, and have only seen the Dragon documentary twice, so I'm not as familiar with those strains of Dragonkind.

[personal note- as a teenager my mother nicknamed me BabyDragon, after i took on an entire hospital..... staff and security team... to get my mother proper treatment... and won. The name morphed into MamaDragon when i had children of my own}

Dracling Brooder Instructions:

You will need the following materials to provide a comfortable setting for your little draclings

*8967 Concrete Blocks
*234 Panels of Fire resistant Plating
*65 Grammy Nightgowns
*8- 2" diameter 50 foot long pieces of rebar
*Gold Plated Forged Steel Roofing Panels
*Approx 516 Red Bricks
*30' Black stovepipe
*12 Electrical sockets
*One set of both Ankle and wrist shackels
*1 Hoho

Assemble concrete blocks in octagonal form, building walls 34' tall. Coat walls with pasted on Granny nighties (the flame retardant kind). Cover those with the fire resist panels. Roof with gold plated forged steel. use rebar for perches and red bricks to build a warming oven. Use stovepipe to vent. Hastily wire 12 sockets. it is fireproof and you are hatching dragons so flames are not even a consideration. you have more important things to do than ground wires all day. I mean geez man what is wrong with you. hatching Draclings takes time and all you can do if focus on the small stuff. Maybe you ought to just quit now if you cannot get pass this issue.

Fasten Ankle and wrist shackels to walls for the occaissional virgin sacrificial snack.

Sit back relax and treat yourself to a hoho, unless your still working on that darn wiring. You are never gonna get anywhere in life with attention to detail in life like that. Forget it man, i am taking the hoho home and cutting out of here. I mean you don't like want to listen then fine. forget you man.......

I draw lots of dragons (or Dragyns, as I call them). Wyverns, firedrakes, findrakons, hornwyrms- you name it. I have drawings of anatomy (after all, how DO they breathe fire?), skeletons, skin, wings (must have much aerodynamics to lift such a large creature), etc. My veiw is thus: dragons have a seperate "fire chamber," much like a chicken's crop. I mostly draw Wyverns, two-legged, winged dragyns, but the occasional wyrm (legless) pops up too. They (back to wyverns, no) only have two legs (it is physically imposible for a reptile to have four legs and wings. That would be six limbs.) and a pair of wings similar to a pterydactals' or bats'. These amazing creatures, directly decended from pterydactals and pteranodons, are now in hiding, along with the rest of the fe (faeri) race in a land called Terria (Earth in New Elvish), encased within a Magykal Sphere, which no Human may penetrate. Dragyns were originally wild, the elven Dragyn Tribe tamed a rare few. Dragyns are extremely smart: the tame ones think exactly like the incredibly intellegent elves and are able to speak within their Bonds' heads.
While I am at the subject of dragyns I must also mention elves. Elves are much like humans, only they are slightly smaller and much slighter of stature, and posess pointed ears and limited Magyk. There are four Elf tribes: Tiger, Wolf, Horse, and Dragyn, in accordance to their steeds. The males constantly war with the males of other Tribes and are rarely at home. Before a tame dragyn hatches, elves Feel the eggs. If they receive a Feeling called the mesmerai (bonding), they have a Bond with the elf and the elf becomes their Ryder. Dragyns are more than a steed to elves of the Dragyn Tribe, they are friends and companions. There are two variations of the Elvish language: Old Elvish, a system of runes, almost died out; and New Elvish, which is composed of letters.

You can tell I take this very seriously. I should be the administrator of Backyard Dragons.

I will try to post some of my dragyn drawings and anatomy for you later.
