Backyard Brahmas!!

Good chicken day today. Eggs are hatching, hen laid an egg after breaking her brood and moving her 600 miles from Texas, moved 3 week olds to the coop and worked more on predator proofing. All in all, a really good day. And...we got 1/4 inch of rain last night, first real moisture since March!

Based on what I have read, Brahmas mature very slowly, however one of the two pullets I have (they are 12.5 weeks), has a red face and wattles most of the day. I am saying most of the day because sometime when I check her in the morning, its pink just like the other pullet. What could be going on? Hormonal surges? or maybe she is not a pullet after all? She looks like a pullet from every other aspect. This is her picture from 10 days ago followed by her sister's pic. Even in this pic, she had slightly darker pink on her face.

I have two pullets that have red faces from very young, they´re definitely pullets, due to start laying soon.

Yep my guys' faces change shades too!
Roos are known to change shades when agitated temporarily. However, my pullet's face starts turning read around 9-10 AM and then stays red all day. Its not flaming red though, so if she is maturing early she still got at least 3-4 weeks to go before she lays. She is 2.75 lbs at this stage. None of my standard size hens are more than 5.5 lbs so even if she gets to 7-8 lbs, that will be an improvement on others.

P.S. I have an Australorp, a Red Star and a RIR, all hatchery quality so probably thats why low in weight.

Any input on whether this cockerel might lose this color on his breast with age? :( His blue is beautiful where it shows but I'm afraid I know the answer here, just being hopeful. If not hopefully I'll get a blue cockerel from my latest hatch. :)

And just one shameless shout-out to my handsome Big Boy.. Bless his heart (and mine), both his partridge ladies are now broody so I've been letting him out alone this weekend. He hangs out within a few inches of my layer girls.. Sometimes I let them out for company with him, but they end up in the garden and in trouble with my hubby. :gig
So I figure he's better off just visiting and staying out of trouble. ;)
